Runaan was distraught.
He'd tried everything he could to wake up the other assassins, but they hung limp and lifeless. Occasionally, one of them would breathe faster, as if exerting themselves.
Great. Not only had he failed as a father, he'd also failed as a leader.
His head whipped up as Viren entered the room. He pulled up a chair and sat down. "So." He said with feigned cheerfulness. "How are you today?"
Silence, broken only by a distant scream. Then a yell. Then a thud and another yell.
Viren gritted his teeth. "Good, I take it?"
Runaan didn't answer, instead wondering why the yells and thuds sounded familiar. Of course, he'd been hearing the same scream over and over again since a few days ago, but the yells started a little while after.
What was really chilling, though, were the sobs that echoed through the halls at what seemed to be night. Sometimes, a man. Others, a teenage boy. Occasionally, a young girl. Then there was muted swearing occasionally, as if someone was standing right in front of the door.
"Are you listening?"
Runaan stared at Viren. He usually wasn't one to zone out, but these were... Unusual circumstances.
"Do you have any questions, or may I ask you some?"
Runaan contemplated this. It seemed suspicious that Viren was suddenly being nice. "What have you done with the others?" He growled.
"I temporarily borrowed their spirits." Viren explained, a vein on his forehead bulging. "To... Fetch some items for me."
"Who's the one screaming?" Runaan demanded.
Viren paused. "Someone with some temporary value to me." He said at last.
Suddenly, the door swung open. Viren turned, ready to clobber the intruder, but he dodged at inhuman speed. He was relatively tall, wearing a navy blue cloak that shielded his face from view and also covered his body down to his silver boots. "He's here." He snarled. "That ********** king of Neolandia."
"Go delay him." Viren ordered in a casual tone.
His fists balled. He shifted his weight as if he was going to kick Viren (personally, Runaan would have cheered him on).
Viren smiled. "Have you forgotten about her already?"
Viren probably didn't hear it, but Runaan's ears picked up one softly spoken word. Something that sounded like 'hands'. He hissed, stalking off and slamming the door.
"Who is that boy?" Runaan asked cautiously.
Viren kneaded his temple with his fingers. "She is a girl. And don't you know her?"
Runaan's blood froze at the next words. "She's one of you."
