Sitting across from Adrian in a small lounge at one of the other cafes in court a week later, I bite my lip, waiting to hear his response.
"Are you serious?" he asks in awe. I nod my head and take a sip out of my tea and swallow it, trying to calm my racing anxiety.
After my mother and I talked, she took me out of court and bought some prenatal vitamins along with booking me an appointment with a human doctor forty-five minutes away for an ultrasound in a few weeks. Because Lord Szelsky has no intention of returning to Nepal anytime soon, she has been around almost every day, checking on me and making sure that I'm eating and sleeping.
"Wow, no wonder your aura is so weird. It is so bright in the center, almost like a bubblegum pink colour. I take it Dimitri didn't take it well," he says as he lifts his cup to his lips and taking a drink.
"No. He didn't, he threw me out of his apartment and hasn't spoken to me since. He thinks I cheated on him," I groan, resting my head on my hand. He shakes his head and huffs, raking his hand through his already tousled hair. "Well, he's an idiot. I mean, the moment you mentioned Dimitri's name the baby's aura blew up like a supernova. He'll come around once he calms down."
I snort a laugh that turns into a fit of laughter. "He isn't going to come around Adrian, as far as I'm concerned, he's already cozying up with Tasha," I gasp through my laughter, tears running down my face in bother mirth and despair. The thought of him being with Tasha made my heart ache even more. But he hasn't reached out to me, and he continues to reject my calls. If he is moving on, I should start to as well. I guess all the sacrifices I have made were for nothing, and I shouldn't have bothered to begin with.
"Who all knows?" Adrian asks as he studies me carefully, looking a little worn.
"Aside from him? You and my mom. My mom has been supportive so far. I didn't realize how much I wanted her until she was there. I haven't told Lissa because she has such a heavy workload right now, and I don't want to bother her," I explain as we stand and bring our cup back to the counter and leave the building, Adrian leading the way.
Walking quietly back towards the Dhampir section of court, I look down at my feet and wrap my arms around myself, getting lost in thought. How was I going to take care of my baby if I'm still a Guardian? Housing isn't cheap, and babies are expensive. Not to mention the walls in housing are not thick and a crying baby would keep everyone else up around me.
"Rose," Adrian says, tapping me on the shoulder. I snap my head up to him and see his gaze straight in from of him, following it I notice a tall figure moving swiftly towards us and I feel my heart rate pick up and the ache in my chest throb. Dimitri is heading straight for us. Coming to a stop just in front of us, I cast my eyes down to the grass beneath our feet, looking at him hurts too much.
"I need to talk to Rose privately," Dimitri says, and I flinch a little at his voice. I slide my gaze over to Adrian, silently pleading for him to stay. I don't think I can handle what Dimitri is about to say.
"Naw, I think I'll stay for this conversation. I don't think Rose wants to be alone around you after your last conversation. Randall junior," Adrian says snidely, and I furrow my brows at him.
Randall?
"You told him?" Dimitri snaps at me, and I step back from him slightly, tightening my arms around my waist. A flicker of regret flashes through Dimitri's eyes before he slams his Guardian mask firmly in place.
"Told him what? I don't know who Randall is," I say quietly.
"Randall is my uncle, Dimitri's father. Apparently, walking out runs in the family," Adrian says, stepping closer to Dimitri, but moving so that I'm behind him. I can see anger burning in Dimitri's eyes and his hands clench tightly. "Adrian, that's enough," I whisper, trying to prevent the verbal beat down that's about to happen, but Adrian waves me off.
