A Town Called Mercy

"Welcome to Mercy." Naruto read the old wooden sign that was planted firmly in the dirt. The words were sharp with thin lined letters and unevenly written out. It seemed to you that it was probably written with a pen knife.

"Let's go," Kakashi said, pulling you from your stupor. "What're you waiting for?"

"N-nothing, coming, Sensei." You scrambled past the town sign next to the rest of your team. You were too busy analyzing the sign to notice that they had moved.

Your team walked through the dusty streets of the town. There was no one outside which made it feel kind of eerie to you. A knot of worry grew in your stomach.

"What is this? A ghost town?" Sasuke snorted from next to you.

"I know r-"

"I was thinking the same thing, Sasuke," Naruto interrupted you. It was only then that you realized that Sasuke was talking to Naruto. Not you.

Kakashi scanned the area with his only visible eye. "You're right. There's no one outside."

"Do you think it's because of that guy who's always picking fights, Sensei?" Sakura asked.

"Good question," he said without looking up from his book. "Could be."

"Sensei?" You snatched the book from his hands. "Stop reading this trash, and give us instructions. What do we do now?"

"First of all," he took Icha Icha back from you, "Don't take things that aren't yours," he joked "and secondly, I think we should split up."

"And since we have five in our group, I think we should all split into a 3-2 type of deal." Sakura recommended.

"Wow, you've finally contributed." Sasuke snorted.

Sakura looked hurt and became quiet.

"I agree with Sakura. It gives us the ability to sneak around better." You didn't know why Sasuke was being so rude.

"Then it's settled. We'll split up." He looked at all of you. "Who wants to be part of the group of two?"

"I'll do it." You raised your hand. It was no big deal, as long as you didn't die.

"Any volunteers to go with (Y/n)?"

You looked at Sasuke, but he was too busy looking at Naruto to notice.

"I wanna be in Sasuke's group!" Sakura smiled.

"Alright. I guess it's Sakura, Sasuke, and Naruto, which leaves you and me (Y/n)." Kakashi ruffled your hair.

"The objective is to be discreet and find out some information without being too open. You don't want people to know who we're looking for. And we'll rendezvous right here in say... twenty minutes. But first, everyone remove your headbands. We're trying to be discreet, okay?"

"Yes, sensei." Everyone agreed, removing their headbands.

Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke headed off in one direction which left you and Kakashi to explore somewhere else.

"Do you want to try a tavern?" You asked, shrugging.

"Sounds good."

The tavern was teeming with life. People were drinking, laughing, eating, and basically having a good time. No one paid attention as you and Kakashi walked in.

"Let's split up and ask a few questions." You suggested, taking a step in another direction.

"I don't think we should." Kakashi put a gentle hand on your shoulder.
