PREETA

It was now coming to a month since she left India for United States. At first she was very scared because she thought life was going to be hard especially living in a new country with different people, life styles and many other things she wasn't used to but surprisingly, the life she thought would be difficult turned out to be just fine. And thanks to her best friend Sophia who  helped her make adjustments to this new life. The people were great and found them to be none  judgemental like those in her neighbourhood back in India. She  also made new friends aside from Sophia. Life was going to be just fine and she was  looking forward to it.
However, she still feels guilty for not binding farewell to her family or even informing anyone about her plans.  No one knew where she was not even Shrishti, before leaving she thought of telling her everything but unfortunately she didn't say anything for  she wanted to be in charge of her life and be far away from judgments and humiliations she would have got and her family. In other words she left to protect them.

She was pregnant and needed a peaceful life both for herself and  her child, it sounds selfish but what could she do?, it's what it is. What she knew was that it won't be easy being a single parent but for her child she was willing to sacrifice anything and would see to it that the baby had a good life.
She wondered how Karan was doing, was he happy, does he think about her like she does and that's how Sophia found her very deep in her thoughts. "Hey, what's up?, you seem to be thinking out loud, what's the matter?", Sophia asked her; she turned,  looked her and said "am just thinking", "about what" asked Sophia. One thing Sophia knew about Preeta was that she was a very private person. They shared a lot of secrets but sometimes it took long for Preeta to say or open up. Had she not caught her and Karan once in a very comprising position, she suspected she wouldn't have known that something was going between the two, she remembers that day like it's yesterday and  it still  surprises her that they are expecting a baby because she always found them very different persons  but as the saying goes, opposites attract opposites and who is she not to believe if she has seen it with her own eyes, she thought as she waited for Preeta's reply.

Since Preeta wasn't answering her back, she asked her if she was thinking about Karan however Preeta told her its not him but her family she was thinking about however Sophia knew she was  lying. "Am wondering how my mum, my sister, my sweet aunt Jhanki and grandma are doing, you know I left without telling them where I was heading too  and now am worried, I keep wondering if  my mum is still angry with me; look at me I disappointed her and she was expecting so much from me, am pregnant and my baby daddy thinks am a monster, my life is such a mess and I don't know if it will ever be okay" Preeta muttered. Sophia looked at her feeling sorry for her, she did something she knew her friend needed at that time. She hugged and comforted her; " am sorry that you've been through a lot, am not the best person you need now but I promise as your friend and sister am gonna be here and will forever be there for you in this life and whatever you need am at your service" she told her. "And just so you know one thing I won't be here  to help you with is satisfying you sexually,  pregnant women are very sexually active so  i won't help in that department" she told her jokingly trying to cheer her up  and she was glad she did because Preeta threw a cushion at her, smiled and told her how she had dirty thoughts and being insane. "Am glad I made you laugh" Sophia told her. "Thank you Sophia,  I don't  know what I would do without you" Preeta answered to her friend.

She got a cell phone that had a private number that Sophia owns. With it they won't know what number she had used or even know her location. She still didn't want anyone to know where she was or what she was doing . Sophia convinced her to at least  call Shrishti and inform them that she was doing fine and that they shouldn't worry but she was scared with how her sister would react, she never had  the courage to say goodbye to her well then  only left her a small piece of paper so she felt anxious and spooked but she had to do this. She looked at Sophia who only kept encouraging her, she even offered to talk to Shrishti on her behalf but Preeta refused. She had Shrishti's phone go through she  took a heavy breathe she didn't know she was holding; on the third forth ring she had a voice she hadn't heard in these few weeks, " hello" Shrishti answered but no one was talking back;  but as she was about to hang up she had Preeta's voice and was stunned for a minute. "Preeta" she called with so many emotions, she couldn't believe,  it was her sister on the other side of the phone and the feeling was mutual even with Preeta. "Is this really you" Shrishti said with much excitement, she had tears in her eyes, her sister has just called her.

"How are you doing?, grandma, aunt Jhanki and mum".  She asked while hesitating. Preeta was terrified of asking about her mom because even though she was happy to  know how she was,  she still thought her mum was angry with her and may never forgive her but hearing from Shrishti that she was fine still felt guilty  about her leaving their home; she felt happy and sad at the same time . She's the reason her mom was angry in the first place; she disappointed her and for that,  she's gonna make sure and show her mum that leaving was the best decision and to make her proud one day but she didn't tell Shrishti that. That was her secret. "Where are you?  and why don't you come back home?, we miss you very much, everyone does. Come back home and we will take care of you  and the baby, mum regrets how she treated you, please come back home and we live like before, we will support you" Shrishti told her. Preeta was happy to hear that from Shrishti but unfortunately, she had already decided to start a new life away from them. It was a selfish move but she also wanted to know who she would  become away from her family, Karan and those who thought she was a no-body.

The little time she has spent in the United States, she has found out that young men and women leave their homes and persue their careers, grow to become better people without depending on anyone and that's what she wants for herself . She wants to be someone important, a person her child will feel proud of but deep inside she  wanted to prove to Luthras that not everything is about money and that  people like her can be successful through hard work. And to show them that not all middle-class people are golddiggers. She really resents them for that.
"Am sorry Shrishti but I can't tell you where I am right now, but I promise to tell you as soon as I have settled in well; I want to be by myself for sometime. You know what happened after my wedding, how the neighbours treated me and how i was told,  I was cursed, my life would be in hell if I didn't leave. Or even what they would say about my mother, I didn't want to give them more reason to tarnish our family, being away is best for everyone" Preeta told her. However,  am doing fine however I was  missing you and wanted to know how you've been doing. She stated. Hearing what Preeta had said, she knew she was right. Her sister didn't need this hate, judgments from people much less now in her conditions and even though she missed her, she promised to support her and that she's gonna wait for her whenever she ready to tell them where she is.

Shrishti wondered why she didn't ask about Karan, with the time they've spent talking, so she brought his name up. She wanted to tell her what Sammy had told her but before she could go any further, Preeta told her to never bring up Karan or Luthras in her conversations with her. She told her she was starting her new life and wanted nothing to do with Luthras. Shrishti thought maybe she hates them now but she understood her sister, the Luthras not all of them but even those who did nothing to her, at the end of the day did nothing to help but looked on as others kept humiliating and insulting her. So she promised to never bring them up. They ended their calls with Preeta  telling Shrishti to take care of her family since she's away and to inform them to stop worrying as she's doing fine.
