DRISHTI'S POV
I woke up with a tremendous headache, the temples in my forehead throbbing. It took me a few moments to realize where I was, the white ceiling of my room focusing in and out of my vision. Judging by the ample sunlight streaming on the white marble floors, I deducted that it was early morning. I tried to sit up, but my entire body protested in pain. And that is when I remembered the events of this morning. Or is it the next day? How long have I been senseless? I tried to speak, but nothing came out of my throat.
I felt a soft hand caressing my hair and a voice that soothed every pain in my body.
~ "Di, good morning. How are you feeling now?"
Divya peered over me, her face drawn in a plastic smile that failed to hide the concern in her eyes. Her usually bright eyes were now red, as if she had been crying.
I tried to speak, but my throat remained sealed. Divya, who understood my ailment, continued to smile forcefully.
~ "Di, don't worry, you are okay. See? You slept for a really long time. Almost twenty four hours... But that's okay... You were unwell... Anyways, are you hungry? Should I bring you something to eat, I think I should bring you something to eat. Do you know Maasi made -"
~ "Is he in jail?"
My voice was hoarse and sore as I chewed out the words with much difficulty.
Divya fell silent, avoiding my gaze purposefully. She fidgeted with the hem of her saree as I waited for an answer.
~ "Di, we - we can have this conversation later -"
~"He bailed himself out with money, didn't he?"
Once again, silence prevailed. A tear escaped down my right eye and Divya hastily wiped it down. I grabbed her hand, sandwiching it between my own.
She bent down and hugged me.
~ "Di, you sold yourself to that beast for my sake - why Di? Nothing is more important for me than you, your safety, not even my reputation. Why Di - why did you jeopardize your life for me? I thought you loved me, but no, you don't. You gave me sleeping pills so that I could not interrupt you. Di, since the very childhood, we have done everything together. We have celebrated and mourned together. Then why - why did you do this? Di - why?"
She weeped on my sleeve, but I could do nothing. How can I knowingly put my beloved sister's life in danger?
Divya wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. She sat up on the bed, her expression unreadable.
~ "Di, Rakshit is here. He has been here since yesterday morning, sitting outside the room, waiting for you to regain consciousness. He has not eaten anything ever since. He told Maasi that once you wake up and eat, he will eat too. So, please eat something Di. Not for you, not for me. For him."
She didn't wait for a reply, instead she helped me sit up and strode out of the room. The way she said for him sent an electric spark down my spine. My heart wrenched at the thought that Rakshit had punished himself, he had bore my punishment alongside me, even though he had no fault in whatsoever had happened.
I pulled the sheets upto my waist and breathed in the jasmine scent that now floated in my room. I closed my eyes, letting the morning breeze soothe by skin.
I heard the click of a door opening and the sound of soft, hesitant footsteps. I opened my eyes to face Rakshit.
