RAKSHIT'S POV

I am quite dissapointed and kinda pissed off as well. I hadn't expected this from Drishti. But then, being her husband and expecting anything from her was wrong. But still, she could have atleast wished me.
Yeah, it is my birthday, actually, it will be my birthday, within a few minutes, five minutes. But Drishti isn't even here, she is sleeping with Divya. They are having a sister's bonding type thing.

Sometimes, I kinda get jealous of Divya. She gets to see and experience so much of Drishti, meanwhile I was Drishti's on and off husband. Yeah, you read that right. On and off husband. You might have heard of on and off boyfriends, on and off girlfriends and on and off relationships. But I am Drishti's on and off husband. Frankly speaking, by the time I figure out what phase we are in, the on phase or the off phase, she has alreay moved on to the other one.

But this was wrong - she should atleast remember my birthday. I mean this is mandatory wife duty, though, in no means, do I want to force her into doing anything. All I want to state is that, just a simple wish from her would mean the world to me. Atleast, then I would know if she remembered or not.

I checked the time on my phone.
Thirty seconds.

Sure that Drishti would not come anymore, I pulled the sheets over my head and closed my eyes with a heavy heart.

I was so busy resenting Drishti's ignorance of my birthday, that I lost track of time. I regained my senses on the sound of a small ping, notifying the arrival of an incoming message.

~ "Rakshit?"

The text was from Drishti. It was exactly twelve o'clock.

Maybe she remembered - maybe she remembered that it is my birthday.

~ "Yes?"

Of course, she remembered - how could she -

~ "Could you do me a favour?"

Does 'Happy Birthday' start with a 'C'? Of course, no.

~ "What?"

~ "Can you please bring me and Divya a tub of ice cream from the kitchen?"

Yeah, you forgot my birthday, and now instead of apologizing, you want me to bring you and your sister a tub of icecream.

~ "Sure."

Disgusted and irritated, I got down from the bed and proceeded towards the kitchen with heavy steps.
I opened the kitchen door and stepped inside. The kitchen was dark and stuffy, the windows all boarded shut.

I opened the fridge door and pulled out a tub of icecream, a colorful note on the top catching my attention immediately.

I rested the tub on the kitchen table and undid the note from the top.

"Come upstairs, on the terrace."

Great! A stupid joke by Drishti and her prankster sister Divya. What a great start to my birthday!

Irked more than ever now, I stomped upstairs, opening the terrace door with a loud bang.

My entire world turned upside down the moment I saw what was happening on the terrace.

                                 ~

The terrace was decorated beautifully - fairy lights, candles, hanging lanterns, the entire place looked like a dream. But what caught my eye was a small round table set in the middle of the terrace. A plain white table cloth lay over it; two chairs rested on two sides of the table, facing each other. On top of the table, a single white candle lay glowing, flickering in the night breeze.
So, this is my surprise.

I was so awed by the beauty of my surroundings, that I had barely noticed what was happening behind me.
My trance broke immediately as I felt two delicate hands move up my chest and a soft female body press down upon my back.

~ "Happy birthday, Rakshit."

A soft pause. I closed my eyes and focused on the familiar female touch, my senses numbing for a moment.

~ "And you thought that I would forget your birthday."

I pulled apart and turned around, coming face to face with Drishti.

~ "You know, as soon as we get back to Mumbai, you should try for acting auditions. You know quite an impressive lot of acting for a kindergarten teacher."

I laughed, she joined me. And that is when I noticed what she was wearing. Drishti was clad in a red slit dress, the slit exposing a lot of her left leg. Her hair was tied back into a loose side bun, a few  strands framing the side of her face. There was no jewellery on her, expcept for a small silver heart shaped necklace round her neck.

~ "Drishti, you look beautiful."

She wrapped her arms around my neck and stood on her tiptoes.

~ "I know that, Rakshit. You have told me countless number of times that I am beautiful, kuch aisa boliye jo mai nahi janti hun."

Huh? Well, Drishti, there are a lot of things that you don't know yet, my feelings for you being one of them.

~ "Hmm... Lemme think... You do not know -"

~ "Shhhh..."

She placed her index finger on my lips.

~ "Rakshit, tonight, I will tell you something that you don't know."

And before I could react, she took a few steps back and sat down upon the terrace floor on one knee.
