Luke's p.o.v
* * * *I roll over in bed, checking my phone immediately for any missed texts or calls from Meredith, but there was nothing. I hadn't heard from her in 3 days.
Losing Meredith has been one of the most painful experiences I've had to go through. I felt empty without her smile and her laugh. I miss her small body being close to mine. I missed everything about her and I wanted nothing more than to redo dinner that night—to keep my mouth shut and not blow the entire secret at such a horrible time.
I hear the front door of the house open then close quietly. "There you are, Ash. We were worried sick about you. How'd it go with Mere yesterday?" Calum's voice breaks the silence.
Meredith? I get up quietly and crack my door open, listening in on their conversation.
"She looked—drained, Cal."
"Drained?" Mikey questions.
"Heartbroken, tired and drained." Ashton says.
"Well what are you going to do?" Calum asks.
"I don't know, man. I have no idea."
"Luke won't even get out of bed." Mikey says.
"Meredith looked like she hasn't been awake in days." Ashton sighs, "but I just don't know why they would lie to me."
"You didn't think to ask Meredith why?" Calum laughs lightly.
"No—I didn't, but she did tell me she was sorry—and then she said something that got my brain churning and thinking like—is keeping them apart a good idea?"
Of course it isn't, you nimrod.
"Well what did she say?" Mason chirps as she exits the bathroom.
"You little eavesdropper—come here." Calum says with a laugh.
"She said she's not sorry for loving Luke—and that she wouldn't apologize for it either." Ashton breathes, his hand slapping against the side of his thigh.
"Wow." Mikey says after a few moments of silence.
I walk down the hallway, an immense amount of love and heartbreak threatening to make me do something I probably shouldn't.
"She said that, Ash?" I ask while everyone's heads turn in my direction. I look up at Ashton, "I asked you a question."
"Don't fucking talk to me like that, Luke."
"Did she say that?"
"Yeah—yeah she fucking did, alright?"
"Why are you so against your sister being in love with me?" I ask, licking my bottom lip as I think of her telling Ashton she was in love with me.
"Don't push it, Luke." Ashton warns, pointing his finger at me.
"I make her happy—I make her feel safe, content, loved and that's still not good enough for you?"
"Luke, enough." Mason says quietly.
"Shut up, Mason. I don't need your shit right now."
"Luke, watch your fucking mouth with my girl." Calum growls.
"Did you see Meredith make a big deal out of Calum and Mason being together?" I ask, folding my arms across my chest.
Ashton glares at me, "It's not the same."
"It is. Calum's as much of a brother to her as you are, but she doesn't care about that—because he's happy," I emphasize, "So let me make Meredith happy—let me love her."
"Why should I? After the shit you pulled at dinner the other night—"
"That was just me being protective of her because I love her. Are you not getting that through your thick skull? I'm in love with your sister—"
"Oh you and her both with that 'I'm in love' shit." Ashton shakes his head.
"Will you fucking listen for five seconds?" I grab onto his shoulders.
"I love Meredith, Ashton. I love her with every bone in my body and then some. I'm sorry for lying to you, but you have to let me make things right between her and I—do I have your blessing?" I ask.
Ashton is quiet for a moment. He looks back and forth between all of us before sighing.
"Don't break her heart, Hemmings."
I smile and pull Ashton into a hug. To my surprise, he hugs me back, "I mean it, Luke."
"You got it—I've gotta go." I say, quickly slipping on a pair of shoes and grabbing my car keys from the hook.
"Where are you going?" Mikey asks.
"Meredith's—duh, Mike."
"Just making sure you knew where you were going." He holds up his cup of coffee. I laugh and shut the door, pulling my phone from my pocket as I head down the front steps to my car.
I click Meredith's contact and bring the phone to my ear. After a few rings, it goes to voicemail.
"Babygirl? I know your phone is probably off, but I'm on my way to your house. I fixed everything. We're gonna fix this. I love you, I'll see you soon. Bye."
I hang up the phone and continue the drive to Meredith's place. The thought of being with her and kissing her instantly made my heart full. I want her so bad and I'm going to do everything in my power to get her back.
I pull into her driveway a few minutes later, jumping out of my car and rushing up the stairs. I knock on the front door and wait for her beautiful face to appear, but I'm soon met by Meredith's mom. She smiles, "Hi Luke honey, what can I do for ya?"
"Hi," I lean down and kiss her cheek, "is Meredith here?"
She furrows her eyebrows, "Didn't she tell you?"
I shake my head, "I'm sorry, I haven't talked to her in a few days. Tell me what?"
She gives a small smile, "Honey—she left about an hour ago for the airport."
She what?
"The airport?"
She nods, "She's heading back to the states."
My heart sinks to my stomach, but I knew I had to try and get to the airport before she gets on that plane. I turn around and run to my car, swinging the door open.
"Where are you going, honey?"
"The airport."
