Spoilers for The Magnus Archives Episode 159-160 and also everything leading up to it!
Warning: shipping, mild body horror, so much trauma. They went through a lot.
Altered canon a lot so instead of fleeing they are now free and nothing bad happens.
The train and bus ride are done in silence, neither wanted to talk and possibly be faced with talking about the Institute or the Lonely or even their feelings.
But as Tango stared out the window at the rolling hills of the Scottish Countryside, he can't help but let a small smile cross his face at the feeling of Impulses head on his shoulder, sleeping peacefully.
After hours of non stop travelling they make it to Rens 'Safe House'. He apparently owned a lot all over the British Isles. Mostly in Britain. But he gave this on to Tango and Impulse.
"It's the furthest away from here and the safest." He told them as he handed a tired Impulse the key.
They were all so tired honestly. After Tango had given up a rib (the least fun part of that experience) and dived into the Lonely's fog to rescue Impulse, the two were inseparable.
Well more than they had been for weeks.
That night haunts them both. Impulse, the crushing terror of being surrounded by everyone yet no one at once, hearing voices of loved ones telling him he needed to stay there, in the fog and be lost forever.
Tango remember the fight they had, him desperately trying to get Impulse to just see and look at him. To not disappear again and to please just know he was there.
They were both grateful for the others, without Mumbo and Docs quick thinking of putting the tape recorders by the entrance they wouldn't of been able to escape.
But until everything calmed down and they could safely go back to London without dander of death, kidnapping or most supernatural dangers, they would stay in Scotland.
"It only has one bed considering it's just for me really." Ren has warmed the duo, but they didn't care anymore. Being alone and away from each other would be so much worse then sharing a bed.
"If you need help with anything just knock on any fore five times!" False instructed them from the swirling doorway that lead to endless hallways. She had other things to do, mainly the Distortion needed her for finding other avatars.
And now the silence of the trip settled. That night they both collapsed in the large comfy bed and slept till long past noon the next day. It was the first time in a long long time since they'd slept on a bed. A normal bed.
Not a cot in a Institute, or a desktop on top of research or whatever else's they did.
It took a while to actually go into the small town they lived near. It wasn't until they ran out of food (not statements Tango needed, that would take years and even the Scar and Grian were still out getting more) no, normal human food.
Tango thinks human would be strange to call themselves. Impulse couldn't help but agree.
So they went down, getting strange stares. Thankfully Tango had gotten a scarf and was wearing his usual outfit, so most his scars were covered and away from prying eyes.
Impulse was giving friendly smiles and waves to people and answering the questioning look they got by saying they have moved here for a while. Only as long as needed.
One young girl, walking with her friends asked bluntly if they were ok the run.
"Only people who are off the radar hide at Rens house." She put it bluntly but was dragged off by her friends before anything else could be said.
Tango Knows she meant no harm, but the question made them both freeze. Tangos hand subconsciously squeezed Impulses and he retired it as they kept walking. The autumn air nipping at their faces.
They spent the rest of the trip to the shop and back in silence, not crushing silence or awkward, a nice comfortable silence.
Until they spotted the worms. It was on their way back up the stone roadway, and Impulse froze. Looking at the field next to them and was staring. Tango almost threw up when he saw the worms.
But it was normal everyday earth worms (the earth, where the Buried and all their followers lived and thrived and couldn't be stopped no matter what they did-) not the silvery ones that scarred both of them. Mentally and physically. More physically for Tango. The round scars marking his skin told that story.
They left quickly, holding each other's hands and the bags tighter and they didn't let each other's hands go until they needed to put away the groceries.
It took a few days to settle into a routine that could work comfortably. And it took longer before they felt comfortable enough to call the safe house a home. But they made the best of a mostly bad situation.
Nothing to bad was happing. And even if neither could look at a spider or worm or book or anything the same again, they could make it work.
Even when a strange letter got lost in the mail, only to be found mostly burned by Impulse at their door step.
Maybe, they could finally live in relative peace.
