Annabeth

♫ ♫ ♫

I was microwaving my Oreo mug cake. At 1am. What? Perks of living alone. What I did not expect was Percy Jackson and Rachel Dare to be barging into my house.

When the two of them walked in, I casually joked, though it still pained me "Am I here to officiate your wedding?"

But as I turned, that smile faded, for Rachel's face was streaked with tears and Percy looked thunderous. "I—you guys okay? Did something happen?"

As he carefully sat on the couch, Percy muttered, "You may want to sit down for this, Annabeth." Okay now he was scaring me. It sounded like someone had just died. I shuddered at the thought.

"What? What is it?" I demanded at their knowing silence.

"Is like, Helen involved with something bad? Anything you know of? Cause you said she was mean..." Percy started, but I cut him off.

"Percy, I told you about my past not so that you'd pity me. But so that you'd understand me. And anyway, she wasn't that bad, it's just that we personally never clicked and her son's were just jerks." I added bitterly.

Percy's eyes were still focused. "This isn't about pity, Annabeth, this is about your safety."

"My safety?" I asked, almost not believing my eyes. "Percy if this is about the time when someone stalked me, well, you know what happens in this city. It's nothing out of the blue. Besides, I think you know first hand that I can defend myself." I put simply.

He shook his head. "It's not that, it's about something Rachel just found out—," he began, but it slipped out before I could help myself, "What exactly is she doing here?"

After all that silence, Rachel spoke through gritted teeth. "I'm here, because when I heard that some psycho was gonna hurt you Annabeth, I couldn't exactly stay at home. Because we're friends. And I know you don't like me very much but if you put Percy out of this situation you'd see that I've been trying to get to know you for quite a while."

I was stunned. How did she know I liked Percy? Was it that obvious? Had he told her about our kiss? She really liked me? Who was after me? Why were they after me? And while my brain was buzzing at a million miles an hour, they filled me in- how Percy had overheard a man with a raspy voice, how Rachel had heard him too, what the so called 'fisher' was and it all just sunk in. I didn't deserve to be tangled up in this mess. I didn't even know why.

Why me?

We calculated, planned, thought of every possible plan, and as Rachel headed home, a new grim look on her face, Percy stayed behind.

"Shouldn't you check on your girlfriend."

"Rachel will be fine. She's armed with a hairbrush," He said, almost cracking a smile.

"Listen Annabeth," He said, twisting the bottom of his tee. "Yeah?" I replied, trying not to sound as terrified as I felt.

"Don't...please don't do your shows...it's dangerous."

"I am supposed to live the whole of my life locked up, only because I feared the risk?" I whispered back.
