She ran, so fast. There were police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances everywhere. Cars zooming from all directions and helicopters in the sky. She had a panicked look on her face as she managed to dodge multiple cars and finally made it home as she slammed the door behind her.
"MOM?!" she yelled out and heard footsteps form the kitchen.
"In here!" her mother called back out and Ava ran into the kitchen to see her mom packing up things into two bags.
"What're we doing?!" Ava panicked.
"Go upstairs, change, grab extra clothes that can fit in this, anything else you may need for a camping trip then come back down" she ordered her.
"Why?" she walked closer to her mom.
"For fuck sake Ava can you just do what I say for once" she stopped packing and rolled her eyes, "I'm sorry. We just need to get out of here. Get out of town and somewhere safe" she told her.
"Why can't we just stay here, we can barricade the walls or something" Ava suggested.
"Listen to me Ava!" she yelled, "We need to get out of here. This isn't a joke or a setup. This is happening and there is no way to control it. We need to think smartly" she grabbed onto her daughters shoulders and shook her as tears streamed down Ava's cheeks.
Ava's mother pulled her into a hug, "It's okay... I'm sorry. We need to go, okay?" she pulled away as Ava nodded lightly before her mother kissed her forehead and shoved her up the stairs.
Ava took the bag with her and carried it to her room, she looked inside to what was already in there, a torch, batteries, canned food, and some water. She sighed and grabbed some clothes from her draw and shoved them in the bag.
She changed out of her clothes. She grabbed a black shirt and threw it on, grey jeans and black boots. She tied her hair into a high ponytail and grabbed her leather jacket and threw that on as well. She packed her phone and went into her bathroom as she grabbed her toothbrush and toothpaste.
She grabbed her pocket knife and tucked it into her boot, Ava grabbed a blanket and rolled it up as she shoved that in the bag and grabbed the bag, diving down the stairs and into the kitchen.
"This is really happening" she breathed heavily as her mom tried to calm her down.
"Breathe. They'll get it under control eventually, until then, we need to go someplace else" she assured her daughter as she nodded, and they headed for the door.
The minute they stepped foot outside, there was chaos. "Should things have started going wrong this soon?!" Ava yelled over the booming noises of car's honking their horns and people yelling and screaming.
"Keep your head down" her mother advised as they climbed into their truck. Ava's hazel eyes looked around their street and saw people hiding in their houses, some running, and others were laying still on their front lawn. She covered her mouth with her hand as her mom pulled out of the driveway.
"Go! Go, mom, go!" she yelled as they began driving away at alarming speeds.
"Don't look at that, baby" her mother told her as Ava continued to look at the disaster around her.
"They said the facility was right next to us... he was right" she said in disbelief.
They drove for a few minutes and reached a traffic jam, "Out" her mother told her as she gave her a confused look but followed her out the car and down the highway, others followed their example.
"Wait! Mom!" Ava yelled when she noticed her mom began to drift away from her, they went down the side of the highway and into a ditch as they climbed up the hill.
