5 'Watch your back'

Ava moved around restlessly in her bed as she mumbled things under her breath, Ed tired to sleep but he sat up in his bed and sat down on Ava's bed as he tried to calm the fifteen-year-old girl. She kept moving around restlessly and grunting as Ed looked at her with sympathy before holding her hand and caressing it with his thumb.

She slowly started to calm down at his comfort and this made the boy smile, "Edward...?" Ava slowly started waking up as she noticed they were holding hands and he took his hand back in embarrassment.

"Sorry it's just, you were having a nightmare and I didn't know wha—" she smiled at his embarrassment and took his hand again.

"It's okay. Thank you" she smiled.

"I best let you get back to sleep" he stood up, but she gripped onto his hand.

"Lay with me?" she asked in a soft voice as Ed rubbed the back of his neck before nodding and laying in bed next to her.

He lay on his back as her head rest on his chest and he looked up to the ceiling and smiled to himself once more.

Ava and Ed woke up to the sound of laughter as they both sat up and looked at the kids surrounding them, "Lay with me...?" Paige said in a mocking voice as Ava scoffed and grabbed her boots, shoving them on and grabbing her knife as she ran outside, Ed followed closely behind her.

She went straight to where Justin stood looking out over the fence, "Anything you need me to do?" she asked him as he broke his gaze and looked down at the slightly smaller girl.

"You're serious?" he chuckled lightly.

"Dead" she said in a serious tone as he stopped laughing and turned to her.

"Alrighty. I was gonna head out and check the roads and the area around us to make sure nothings following us and take them out if they are. You up for it?" he folded his arms and stared at her as she nodded with a stern look on his face.

Ed had heard the whole conversation as he stood with his mouth open slightly and waited for Ava to turned around and see him. She saw him and walked straight past him, "Ava!" he called out her name as she turned around and he gave her pleading look that said it all.

"Please?" he whispered but she ignored his question and headed for Justin's truck.

"Justin" Paige said in a perky tone as he helped her in the back of the truck.

"What the hell?" Ava sat up.

Justin looked at her with a confused look, "What? She offered to come along" he told her as Ava rolled her eyes and slouched in the truck once more. Ignoring Paige's stare and just focusing on Ed in the distance as he looked away from her and started helping around.

She felt bad for leaving him behind, he was the one who said to start making this more like home and she was. She was gonna protect this place like it is home.

"Mmkay. Paige and Ava take the main roads. Dylan and Isaac take the woods and I'll do the rest. Meet back here in an hour and radio if anything goes wrong" he told them and chucked them each a radio.

Ava jumped out the truck and started walking, not caring that Paige was so far behind her. "Hey!" Paige yelled and caught up to her.

"What is it?" Ava said in an emotionless tone and didn't even look at her but Paige rolled her eye and pulled her wrist so she could face her.

"We got off on the wrong foot. You're a badass for being out there for ages and its been a few weeks and I've see how you act. I looked at you like a threat but now all I want is to be your friend" Paige confessed as Ava rolled her eyes.
