Ava's eyes shot open. "Shit" she muttered and climbed out of bed. Shoving on her boots, grabbing her holster, and tying round her waits throwing her Glock inside of it then grabbing her knife and pole. She threw on her jacket as well so fast she could've given herself whiplash.

She ran to Justin's room and shook him awake, "Justin! The fence!" she yelled more than she whispered.

"Wake up Lucas" he ordered, and she nodded, sprinting out of the room, and hearing the fence slowly creak followed by a loud crash. It fell.

She opened the door to Lucas' room and saw him already dressed, knife in holder and gun in hand, his backpack on and his jacket zipped up. He was just putting on his black beanie when he saw her.

"I heard the fence breaking" he told her and finished putting on his beanie.

"Atta boy let's go" she told him, and he jogged passed her, patted her shoulder, and followed him down the stairs.

Just as they did a Dead Runner plummeted through the living room window and scrambled to it's feet not before Ava threw her pole at it and it landed in its head. She grabbed the pole and pulled it out with a grunt Justin dragged the two out of the house, "In the car, now!" he yelled.

Ava helped Lucas in the car and shut the door, climbing in the back of the truck standing up, pointing her gun at the three DR's coming their way. They all dropped to the floor as Justin shoved the last few things in the back of the truck with Ava.

He climbed into the driver's seat, "GO!" Ava yelled and the truck started, they drove away, and Ava glanced at their home for the last time as Dead Runners ran after them, screeching and howling the whole way.

Ava slumped into the back of the truck; she knew it was only a matter of time. The walls had held for seven years. She guessed it would be any day now and was glad Justin was working on them earlier, maybe that brought them some time.

"Where do we go now?" Lucas asked sitting in the back of the truck as Justin and Ava sat opposite him, all of them sharing a can of beans.

"I don't know. Ed always—he always had a plan" she muttered slightly, and Lucas glanced at her. He vaguely remembered Edward, he had ginger hair that he could spot a mile away. He remembered that he could always make Lucas smile no matter what. He remembered the day he died as well. Lucas cried for weeks; he'd constantly ask when Ed was coming home. It wasn't long before Ava had to sit down and talk to him.

Ava was sitting on her bed, her elbows on her knees. She was holding her head in her hands and sobbing quietly.

Lucas stood in the doorway, the ten-year-old peered inside and she looked up immediately, catching his eye. She wiped her eyes and sniffed, "Hey kid, what's up?" she asked, and he opened the door fully walking inside.

"Why are you crying?" he sat on the bed, scooching next to her, and looking up to her.

"I'm fine, why aren't you in bed?" she deflected.

"Don't—just don't. Tell me why're you crying?" he gave her a serious and she felt tears roll down her cheeks again.

"Okay, you remember Edward?" she started, and he smiled, nodding, "Well, he was really special to me. And something happened" she gave him a sad looked and Lucas still looked confused.

They stared at each other, "Edward died. And I had to do something to make sure he didn't become a DR" she explained, and Lucas looked away. All this time she had told him that Ed was exploring and missing. It made sense now.

She expected Lucas to be annoyed or angry that she kept this from him, but he just wrapped his arms around her and hugged her, "He was special to us all" he whispered into her chest.
