Ava and Ed crouch behind a car left in the empty parking lot in the store, "We go in, kill anything dead. If there's someone else in there we..." she thought of what to do.
"We go" Ed smiled and patted her back.
They both ducked down and crawled towards the store, they slipped inside and looked around. "Looks empty" Ava said as Ed nodded, they both looked at the slightly filled shelves and went straight for the canned food section.
"Looks like it's been picked dry" Ed picked up a can of beans and shoved it in his bag while looking at the empty shelves.
"Grab what you can" Ava said and casually picked up a bag of Haribo sweets from a shelf, opening it and eating them.
"Ava, over here" she heard Ed say from round the corner as she followed his voice and walked over to him.
He stood over a body and she became curious, "What is that thing...?" he crouched down and rolled it over to reveal one of the creatures.
The eyes were wide open revealing the same pitch-black eyes as the others, dark red veins covered its face and blood was covering its mouth and hands. It had a bullet hole in its head, "Guess someone dealt with it" he motioned to the head injury.
"Its one of them" Ava said, "These things are wiping out everyone" her voice cracked gently as Ed stood up and placed hand on her cheek.
"We can do this. I'm sure that someone or the army are out there getting this... under... control..." he stopped when he saw a figure in the doorway. Growling with their back hunched over.
"Hello?" Ed called out just as the creature grunted and ran straight for them.
"Shit!" Ava yelled and grabbed his hand, running for the exit, "It's locked" she tried to open it just as the creature ran round the corner and straight for them.
"Ava..." Edward said uneasily as he gripped onto his baseball bat, "Shit!" he yelled and dropped the bat, running at the creature and tackling it to the ground.
He pinned the creatures hands above its head, "Edward!" Ava yelled and managed to get the door open as she grunted and pulled out her knife, running at him and stabbing the creature in the head.
They both fell back and breathed heavily, Ed sat up and helped Ava up as they held onto each other's shoulders, "We should go" Ava said as she let go of him and they grabbed their bags and some more supplies from the shelves before stepping out the exit.
"You know how to start a fire?" Ed asked in disbelief when he stared at the already lit fire.
"Yeah my dad he was... my dad taught me" she smiled.
They sat there in silence sharing can of beans, "So, how did you get here...?" Ava broke the silence.
"Well, my mom and dad died when I was young and my uncle he... he died at the beginning. I was on the road and those guys jumped me, then you saved me" he smiled at her from the other side of the fire, "What about you? What's your story?" he asked her.
"My dad, he was a pilot and he travelled a lot and he came home, he surprised me, and I was so excited to have him back. We were in the car and I was a too excited. He died and it was just my mom and I until this all happened" she started as tears started to fill up in her eyes, "We were trying to get to the top of the hill and get a good view... she slipped and I couldn't hold her. She became one of those things and I had to... had to take care of her..." she cried silently as Ed looked at her sympathetically and walked over to her side.
