Hours pass with me just listening to music on my tiny stereo by my bed. I think my mom is home because I can hear her faint voice coming from the kitchen. This is the lowest I've ever felt. Maybe it's hormones, or the fact I'm going back to school tomorrow and seeing the same fake people every day. Or maybe it could be the fact that my dad's never physically hurt me before. I mean he has damaged me mentally, he has threatened me before, but this is the first time and hopefully the last that he hits me.
I hear a light knock on my bedroom door, and I can tell it's my mom. I unlock the door and she comes in with some chips from the chippy and a bottle of water. "Housekeeping" she jokingly says in a soft tone. I giggle and thank her. She sits on the end of my bed as I start tucking into the warm chips. "Bit messy in here" she says, her eyes scanning my room. She produces a laugh which causes me to laugh along with her. She tells me that I have to clean all the glass up in the kitchen after I've eaten. We have a quick chat and she leaves the room, taking my empty bag of chips.
It gets to 11pm and my parents are in bed, so I decide to go and clean the glass up. I don't get why I'm the one who has the clean up the mess as I didn't even do anything, plus it's dangerous as hell. I'm also very confused to why it actually smashed in the first place. Like how is that even possible?
I get to the cupboard under the stairs and reach in to get a torch, a dustpan and brush. I enter the kitchen and take a look around the dull room. The windows have been bordered up with big wooden planks so no robbers can't get in. I wear shoes so I don't get glass in my feet. I turn the torch on and start sweeping.
I open the lid of the bin and as I'm about to pour in some glass, I notice a letter addressed to 'Jessa Carter' which is me! How strange? I never get letters. And why is it in the bin as this could be important? I put the pan full of glass onto the counter and reach in and grab the letter.
I walk into the living room and turn a lamp on so I can see. I sit down on the sofa and see that the letter is from a school called Hogwarts. What a weird name for a school. I've never heard of it. I open the envelope to find out the school is for Wizards and Witches. But this doesn't make sense because I'm not a witch. I'm just a normal person, right?
The letter says:
Dear Miss Carter,
We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on 1st September.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
"So, you found it?" I hear my mom's voice.
I turn around fast and I see her smiling in the doorway. "I don't understand" I say.
"You're a witch, Jessa."
"What? How come you've never told me?"
My mom sits next to me and begins to explain "Well, I'm a witch, your father's a muggle."
"Muggle?"
"Yes. It means he's not a wizard."
I become confused. "But aren't I a muggle?"
"No. You're a witch. You're a half-blood. But people may call you a (whisper) mud blood."
"Why did you whisper that?"
"Because it's highly offensive to people of your kind as it means you have dirty blood."
"Ugh this is so confusing. Why are you telling me about this now?"
"Well, your father and I have been hiding it from you for years. Ever since first year you've had hundreds of letters inviting you to Hogwarts, but your father didn't want you to go as he just wanted you to be normal."
"Wait, it's my fault then. The glass."
"Yes, exactly. And that's why you need to go to Hogwarts tomorrow because you need to learn how to control your powers before it gets out of hand."
"But, what about my mates? What do I tell everyone? What about Mikey?"
"Well you can still have them in your life, but you can't tell them that you're a witch or that you're going to Hogwarts, they should never know."
"What am I supposed to tell them?"
"Just leave it to me. I'll tell them that you went to some fancy boarding school in London."
I sit there in shock. The fact that I'm never going back to my Muggle school ever again hasn't even hit me yet. I don't know how I feel about it. All this Hogwarts stuff. I'm so behind.
My mom spends the all night teaching me all about the houses, the spells and all the teachers there. This causes me to get excited about the whole thing without even realising that it's light outside and I'm going to Hogwarts in half an hour. I get the hang of most of the spells, they're much easier than learning equations in physics. My mom gives me a wand that I was meant to get given in first year. She also hands me my uniform, but the skirt is so short because I was meant to have it two years ago. It reaches mid-thigh, surprisingly the jumper fits even though my boobs are obviously bigger than it was two years ago. I also get given a cloak which hasn't got the colour of my house on the hood yet because that'll change when I get told what house I'm in by the sorting hat, same with the tie.
Whilst I'm having a quick shower, my mom is packing my suitcase, putting my cloak in there too so I can put it on when I'm on the train so that so Muggles won't know where I'm going. She also puts the Hogwarts help guide in there just in case I forget any spells. I'm not sure if I'm excited anymore. Leaving all my friends to start over with people that already know each other. I feel a massive wave of anxiety when I hear my mom shout "Jessa! We have to be there in 10 minutes! Get in the car! We're going to be late."
I quickly run out the bathroom and down the stairs and I see my dad come out of his room. "Late for what?" he asks.
"School" I reply as I'm leaving the house.
"School doesn't start until an hour."
"Run" my mom says, dragging me into the car and locking the doors. My dad runs out and starts banging on the window. "How are we going to get there in time? London's 4 hours away from here" I ask, worriedly.
My mom leans in to my ear and whispers "Magic". She whips out her wand and casts a spell, but I can't hear what she's saying because my dad is shouting so loud. Suddenly we're going really fast. Like lightning fast. I feel sick and everything around us is blurry. "Just hold on tight, we'll be there soon" my mom says, holding my hand.
We come to a sudden stop and we're here, Kings Cross Station.
