"You may leave us, Lord Vader."
I turned to see my father walk slowly out of the room. Focus, Lani.
"Ah, very good, child. Let go of your father. There is nothing he can do for you. NOTHING!"
The sharpness on his tone startled me, and I jumped slightly, my mind becoming aware of everything on the room. Every little twitch the Emperor made, every senatorial stand, every waver in the sith's voice.
"You are good. Yes, very good." I eyed the old man cautiously. "You are doing this all unconsciously, correct?" I didn't answer, as I wasn't sure what I was doing. "Yes, you'd make a very good Sith."
I shivered. I didn't want to be a Sith.
Keep your emotions under check, Lani. He'll use them against you. Don't think, feel.
I cleared my mind. He wanted to see my thoughts, what my mind dwelled on, to change my opinions. So instead of thinking about sith and my father, I focused on everything that the Emperor wouldn't care about. I thought back to my lessons during school. Mechanics class was easy. I thought. Ummm, history was hard. Who wants to learn about the Gun-Gan heritage? Why they live in their bubbles?
The Emperor looked puzzled. People, I thought. Friend problems. I knew Kiara had a crush on a boy, Xander. I teased her about it without end. Aaaaand Karthik ran into me today, made me drop my books. That was rude. Kiara and I decided to prank him. He should be itching like crazy by now.
The Emperor looked nearly livid. "You may go." He said. "Send Lord Vader back in."
Grinning, I went to go fetch my father.
