Prologue

"Peeta look at me!" I say as I climb up higher onto a tree I found. I grab onto a steady branch and place myself on it to sit there.

"Kat how do you even do that? I can barely even climb up a single step." Peeta shouts up at me putting his hands on each side of his mouth. "This is why I think you're a monkey."

I giggle and climb down to be with Peeta. He's my best friend in the whole entire world and I don't even know what I would do without him. I want him to be in my life forever..even if we are barely 13 right now. Once I get to the bottom of the hollow tree, I surprise Peeta by jumping on his back.

"Piggyback ride?" I ask squishing his cheeks.

"Piggyback ride." He answers before running around the park we are currently at. Giggles and laughs echo through the almost empty park, our days are mostly like this though, smiles and laughter are all around when I'm with Peeta. Suddenly I spot something in the corner if my eye and I tell Peeta to put me down.

"What's wrong Kat?" He asks but I don't respond.

"Follow me," I say as I grab his hand and lead him through a crowd of trees instead.

"Where are we going? What are you doing?" Peeta continues to ask but I still don't respond. I finally see it in front of me and stop as I walk closer to it.

"Woah." He says as we both look at the view, a meadow full of daisies and trees all around. "This is amazing."

"I know right." I say and turn to Peeta. "This is our spot now Peeta because I doubt anyone ever goes back here since it's farther from the park."

"Yeah okay Kat." He answers and I immediately run through the meadow while spreading my arms out wide. I feel the warm, summer breeze against my skin as I run even more, I feel free.

"Hey wait up!" Peeta says as he runs over to me and we both end up running around and chasing each other through the beautiful meadow. After a long while we lay down on our backs and try to catch our breath from all the running. I've never smiled so much before and I'm definitely loving it. I close my eyes as I hear birds chirping nearby and the sun hits my head. Peeta rolls on his side a grabs my hand, which isn't a strange thing since we always hold hands.

"Hey Kat?" He asks nervously.

"Yeah?"

"Promise me we'll always be together and never leave each other?" He asks with a hint of nervousness in his voice, which seems strange to me since a while ago he wasn't nervous at all. He was rather jumping around with joy, but I still give his hand a tighter squeeze.

"Always."

Little did we know, that promise was going to break sooner than we thought.

*KATNISS POV*

5 Years Later

"Katniss you're going to be late for school!"
I groaned and put my pillow over my face. Ugh, I hate Mondays. Who doesn't? I rubbed my eyes and grabbed my phone. I looked at the time, 7:35 am. Shit. It's already the first day of the week and I'm already going to be late for school. I quickly jumped out of bed and stepped into my shower. I showered quickly and wrapped my towel around me. I ran back into my room and chose what I was going to wear, an old Green Day band t-shirt, blank knee-ripped skinny jeans, and my usual black converse that are so worn out that they could fall apart any second.

I quickly pulled my hair into a messy fishtail braid and headed out my bedroom door.

"Bye Prim, bye mom!" I shouted. I looked at the time. 7:50 am.
Damn it. I'm already late for school. Ugh, who even invented school anyways? Maybe it was just some bored idiot who wanted to make kids suffer all day by listening to a boring adult tell us stuff that we will never need in the future, but I guess I just have to deal with it. As I walk to the entrance of my school I hear someone shout my name.

"Katniss!" It was Annie, my best friend.
"Oh hey Annie. What's going on? You look excited." She did, she looked happier than a kid on Christmas morning, but Annie in general is a very happy person so it's not strange to see her like this.

"Well as a matter of fact, Finnick just asked me out!" Finnick was like a brother to me. He's my best guy friend and he's always there for me when I need him. He is also a huge flirt but for some reason he always stumbled between his words when he was with Annie, I kinda knew that they would actually go out one day.

"Oh my god, that's great! What did you say?"
"Yes of course! Don't you remember when I told you I had a crush on him since the third grade?" That's true, I don't remember. I may have a habit of forgetting things way too easily. Before I could answer her a stranger bumps into me and we both collapse to the floor.

"Ouch! oh are you okay?" I ask.

"Yeah I'm fine." I meet his sky blue eyes, and he meets my grey eyes. He looks oddly familiar and pretty cute honestly, actually I have never seen a more handsome guy in my whole life. His blonde, messy curls sweep over his face effortlessly and his deep jawline is as sharp as a knife. I could probably slice a boulder with that jawline. Wow, I barely know the guy and I'm already attracted to him.

"Uh hi...Oh how rude of me! My name is Katniss Everdeen, you must be new here since I haven't seen you around before. Am I right?" I ask

"Yeah I am, wait did you say you're name was Katniss Everdeen?"

"Yeah why" I ask curiously as he begins to glare his eyes at me.

"Why? why?! because you are a
bitch! Get out of my way!" He shouts. He grabs his stuff and runs away. I watch him disappear into the crowds of teens roaming through the halls. Who was he and why did he call me a bitch? His blonde curls sway back and forth as he ru-wait blonde curls, deep ocean blue eyes, wait now I know why he looks so familiar. I never knew I would ever see him again. But he looks so different and I've known him for so long. Could he be the Peeta Mellark I knew before?
