Chapter 38: Running from you ~Part 2~

*3rd Person*

All that could be heard was the pounding of her feet as she ran across the forest floor, the rustling of the leaves in the trees and the distant sound of crows cawing.

She tried to stop running, but she couldn’t. No matter what, she had to keep running. That was the only way to survive.

The trees started to disperse and she could feel her chest lighten. She was close.

Only a little bit father and I’ll be safe. He won’t be able to touch me once I’m at the safe spot.’

With that thought in mind, she picks up her pace and sets her course for the clearing up ahead. Time seemed to slow down as she ran for the opening up ahead, only for her to stop dead in her tracks once she exited the forest.

What she saw stopped her breath dead cold. It was a cliff, that much was plain to see. But what was standing on the cliff was what frightened her, more like who was standing there.

The man in the black cloak with red clouds turned around and stared at her, his beady red eyes glaring holes into her soul.

The two watched each other for what seemed like forever. The sound of crows could be clearly heard now, with the black birds soaring in circles over head.

Just standing there, with him looking at her, made her heart pound inside her chest; pounding so hard that it felt like it was about to burst out of it’s confines.

No words were exchanged between the two, none were necessary. The message was clear. One of them would die, that was inevitable. Who it would be, that was still undecided.

“Itachi…” Her voice comes out in a sad whisper, barely carrying over the song of death the crows were singing.

Ignoring her words, he disappears in a flash, only to reappear in front of her. With his katana in hand, he doesn’t make any move to complete his mission. Instead, he just stands there, a blank look on his face, and watches the girl.

“Itachi….Please….” Again, he ignores her words and stares at her. “You know you’ll regret this.”

That one line seems to strike a cord within him because his gaze softens a little. No longer it being a blank one, it becomes a rather sad one.

“You once told me that you wouldn’t want to repeat what happened the night of your clans massacre. You said that you never wanted to relive the guilt that you felt, and still do feel.” She pauses, gauging his reaction before continuing. “If you kill me, you will be killing my children and you will be just repeating what you did to your clan. Slaughtering innocent lives all because of one order, an order you never wanted to carry out.”

Itachi lifts his gaze and meets hers. Still, no words escape his lips. “Please, Itachi. Don’t do this.”

With a sad smile, Itachi takes one step away from her.

“We all have a part to play. Mine is still being played, yours is almost done. Life is a game; there can never be two winners, or two losers. Only one of each, a winner and a loser. That’s how it is. So I have to do this to keep things balanced. One of us has to die today. I’m sorry.” Itachi disappears in flash, the crows cawing even louder.
