Imagine . . . playing mythomagic with Nico.

"I don't get it," you mumbled to your new friend Nico di Angelo.

He was about the same age as you were - meaning the two of you are 10. He and his sister Bianca had arrived at Camp Half-Blood this morning.

You've been at camp for about a week, so you're still undetermined. You only wished your godly parent would claim you. You still resided in the Hermes cabin until further notice.

You now sat in the Hermes cabin, where all undetermined campers go.

Nico sighed, but had a smile on his face. He picked up a mythomagic card from your stack.

"Hey!" You complained as he glanced at your card. His obsidian colored eyes scanned over the card briefly.

He slid the card back to you. "You could use Apollo as a defense mechanism," he suggested. "He has 2000 defense power. Apollo has plus 30 health, too."

You tilted your head to the side, confused. You had no clue what he had just said, but you went with it.

He pulled a card from his own stack. "What card is this?" He asked you, holding the card in front of your face.

You squinted, trying to read the words that seemed to be floating off the card. You had dyslexia, which made it hard to read.

"Dionysus?" You guessed.

Nico smiled and nodded. "How many attack points does he have?"

Your eyes roamed the card, searching for the first numbers you could see.

"Uh... 500 hundred attack points," you told him. "That's kind of wimpy," you laughed.

Nico laughed along, agreeing. "He's the weakest god in the game."

You and Nico continued to play, Nico winning the entire time.

You sort of got a hang of the game, but not really.

Soon you had two cards left remaining. You had Kronos and Zeus left.

Nico set a card down, a confident look on Nico's face.

You decided on Kronos since the card had infinite attack and defense. You had assumed bigger was better in the game mythomagic.

You slapped the card down, Nico's eyes widening. The confident expression had faded away.

Nico furrowed his eyebrows. "You won..." he muttered under his breath.

"I won?"

You looked at the card Nico had used.

MANTICORE, it said at the top.
ATTACK POWER: 3,000
+5 SAVING THROWS
As a special power it listed, POISON.

You didn't know what a manticore was, but there was a picture of it. You remembered from earlier, Nico said he was attacked by a manticore. You found it a little ironic.

"But I never lose," he pouted. "I'm the king of mythomagic!"

You turned to the bed you sat next to. "Travis!" You called to an older camper that lived in the Hermes cabin. He had light brown hair with blue eyes. He had a younger brother, too.

"Yes, squirt?" He asked as he toyed with what seemed to be a paint grenade. Squirt was the nickname he gave you when he first gave you a tour of the camp. He was at least 4 years older than you.

"I won!" You smiled at the older camper.

"You won at what?"

"Mythomagic!"

Travis gave you an odd look."Mytho-what?"

"This." Nico raised the deck of cards. "Mythomagic."

Travis's eyes lit up. "No way," Travis smiled as he glanced at each card, "I haven't seen these in years!"

"You used to play?" You asked him. His sudden interest in the cards seemed to give you the answer.

"Heck, yeah," he nodded. "I was the champion since Connor sucked."

"Did not!" You hear a voice from a different side of the cabin.

Travis smiled at Nico and you whispering. "He totally sucked."

You and Nico snickered. Travis sat down on the floor with the two of you.

He began to shuffle the cards. "Let me show you the real king of mythomagic," Travis smiled.

...✁...

You shook the memory away.

You stood outside in the pouring rain with your best friend, Travis, holding an umbrella for the two of you.

You didn't care about getting wet.

Tears ran down your cheeks, mixing in with the rain that fell from the heavens.

Beside you, Travis wrapped an arm around your shoulder and pulled you closer into his warm embrace which brought a small amount of comfort.

"Everything happens for a reason, squirt," Travis whispered into your ear. "He would be proud."

Today was May 31.

You stared at the newly placed grave stone that stuck out of the ground.

In memory of Nico di Angelo.
January 28 - May 15, 2029
Loving father, husband, and best friend.

You placed a hand on your baby bump, wishing Nico was still here with you.

You nodded in agreement. You still couldn't believe he was gone when weeks ago, the two of you were lying on the sofa laughing happily and planning your future together.

You had recently found out you were pregnant with Nico's child. You were speaking with him on the phone when he was struck head on by a truck.

Nico fell into a coma.
The doctors said there wasn't brain activity.
He was brain dead.

You had to pull the cord, the medical bills were becoming too much to afford. Ambrosia and nectar weren't enough to save him.

You bent down and placed a bouquet of flowers near the grave stone. "I-I'll... see you in a couple of years, Nico... I love you, ghost boy."
