~•Y/n First Person POV•~
Kageyama and I were walking down the hill from the school.
"How was practice?" I asked.
"It was fine," Kageyama replied.
"I think practice was a little more than fine seeing as you forgot about coming over," I joked.
"Listen, L/n, I'm . . . Sorry. I really didn't notice that practice went overtime." He was looking away from me, toward the ground.
"Well, don't cry over it," I joked. "Seriously, it's fine."
He looked at me and tried to smile. I say tried to because it looked like once he was going to smile, but then got shy about it and stopped. I smiled at him in response. "It's okay to smile," I laughed. "You know that."
He changed the topic by saying, "are your parents still home?"
"Oh, no. They left when I left," I lied. Kageyama nodded and went quiet. "What's up?"
"What?" He looked at me.
"You're making your thinking face."
"I don't have a thinking face."
"You totally do!"
"Then what is it?"
"Well, for one thing, you scrunch you're eyebrows together. Then you bite the inside of your cheek. Like this." I made the face.
"There is no way I look that stupid when I'm thinking," he said.
"That was so rude!" I punched him on the arm.
"That was so rude!" He rubbed the spot where I punched him.
"I was literally making fun of your stupid face!" We crossed the street and Kageyama switched sides with me so I was on the inside of the sidewalk. It's the little things he does to show he cares about his friends: silent acts. Now if only he would walk slower. "No, but seriously, what are you thinking about?" I nudged him playfully.
Kageyama sighed and finally began to talk, "it's just that . . . We've been friends for a little while now."
"Yeah?"
"And you know . . . We've basically known each other our whole lives," he continued.
What are you getting at? "Even though you didn't always like me," I added with a laugh.
"And I've been coming over to your house almost daily for a while now," he went on. I nodded. "I just find it strange that I've never met your parents. In the whole time I've known you, I've seen your parents leave your house one time."
Shit. "I told you they're always on business trips."
"But when do they take care of you? You're always home alone. It's like you live by yourself."
"They're just busy. I can't change that."
"You guys don't even have family pictures up in your house."
"They're in family photo albums. We just never got around to hanging pictures." I should have know this day would come. I should have known that one day he would start asking questions. And that day just had to be today. The anniversary of-
