I've mentionned this tv show in a chapter before, and some of you stated that they had literally no idea what it was. And as I'm going to use more references from Dawson's Creek in the next chapters, I thought that now was a good time to inform you a little more about it.
It's a show that ran on tv in the late 90's, early 00's and I was absolutely obsessed with it. I often compare it to One Tree Hill - some of you might be more acquainted with that one, and the main stories could be similar.
The show involves teenagers from a little town called Capeside, and covers a lot of different topics: coming of age, love, friendship, homosexuality, drugs and alcohol addiction, mental illnesses, family struggles, school struggles... everything teenagers might be involved in, really.
But the main plot, that went along the 6 seasons of the show, was a weird love triangle between Joey - the girl from the creek - a shy but fierce young woman, and Dawson and Pacey, the boys. And that's what I need to clear up a bit for you now, because that's the main reference in the chapter you're going to read.
Joey and Dawson have been best friends for all their lives. When the show starts, we clearly get that Joey is madly in love with Dawson, but the guy doesn't seem to notice that she even IS a girl. He's more into the new girl in town, a New York blondie. On the other side, Pacey is Dawson's best guy friend. He sucks in school, but he's lonely and misunderstood by his family who always puts him down. He realizes pretty early on that Joey is a girl, and a pretty one at that. But when he asks Dawson if he could maybe go out with her (because he's a nice guy, and seeing how close those two are, he'd rather ask than steal the girl) Dawson realizes that he doesn't want Pacey to date Joey.
That's the beginning. In the course of 6 seasons, Joey ends up dating Dawson, then leaves him when she realizes she barely know herself, not enough to be fully engaged in a relationship. Then, she dates Pacey for a while before they somehow break up. She dates other guys in between, but the story seems to always end up on a choice she has to make: will she choose Dawson, her lifelong friend and seemingly soul mate, or Pacey?
This, we discover at the very end of the show, on the last episode ever. I won't tell you who, though.
Of course, there are also lots of other characters and side stories, and I'm aware that this show is sappy and full of clichés, but at the time, it was the best show and I related so much to almost all the characters. And the funniest part is, I was watching a re-run the other day, and the friends were talking about how they were a clique. That's mainly what inspired me to add references of that show in this story.
I've tried to look up for summarizing videos on Youtube, and there were none I could actually use to make a point; but I realized pretty much all the full episodes were up. If you feel interested, just look it up, watch a few minutes here and there, that might help but it's not necessary. You'll get enough details from here and in the next chapter.
I hope I'm not confusing anyone with this, but that tv show was a huge part of my teenage years and I still love it - in fact, I started re-watching episodes here and there since I have all the DVDs. But hey, nevermind. Sorry for the long explanation, but I didn't want you to feel lost while reading what's next.
Thank you guys, I really appreciate you being here and reading this. |-/
