"I'm a Sykes and therefore can fly !" I shouted, my words twinged with impatience. Nothing happened. I let out a loud groan, slumping over exaggeratedly.
Nathan laughed and I furrowed my brows at him. "You have to say it with feeling, and you simply can't shout the words. And one more thing, it's 'I'm a Sykes and can fly' , don't add 'therefore'."
I tuned Nathan out as he continued to drone on and on. Perspiration rolled down my face in endless streams and my T-shirt clung to my back like a second skin. An annoying second skin.
"How d'you know all this anyway, Nath?" I interrupted him in the middle of his 'speech'.
"Experience," Nathan said matter-of-factly. "Were you even listening to what I said?"
"Um.. I was, but not the part about, er .. cleaning the wings?"
"That's what I thought," Nathan said, obviously annoyed. "You're a handful, you know."
I ignored his comment. "I'll try one more time and then we take a break, okay?"
Nathan nodded, leaning against the fence. His jeans were stained with mud that had splashed onto them as a result of me jumping up and down in the mud to express my impatience towards the whole Darogarylia training. He was wearing a black polo shirt, and his wavy hair fell into his eyes, bringing out the blue-green mixture in his eyes. My cheeks felt flushed all of a sudden. I looked away.
I closed my eyes and concentrated. "I'm a Sykes," I whispered. I am a Sykes. I'm going to be a great Darogarylia and make Nathan and Mum proud. "And can fly."
There was a familiar flash of blinding light. I felt light, like my body was stuffed with cotton. I felt like sandy water.. like watery sand.
I opened my eyes. I was rising higher and higher. Stop, I thought. I stopped mid-air and hovered there. I had done it. I had commanded my body to fly for the second time. Only this time, the action wasn't instinctive. Nathan had helped me. I smiled down at him. He was wolf-whistling and clapping wildly. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach and it started doing somersaults. Why was this happening? What exactly did I feel about my best friend, Nathan James Payne?
