Mum released me from the hug long after Nathan had stalked upstairs. I raced after him up the steps.
"DEE ! Wait," Mum called.
"What, Mum?" I replied impatiently, glancing up the stairs. The door to the guest room was shut. I needed to get up there, now.
"You're not gonna bound up the stairs with your wings, silly," Mum chuckled. Oh.
"How d'you make them disappear then?" I asked, genuinely curious.
Mum seemed taken aback by the question. She clucked disapprovingly and said, "Why darling, of course you tell it to disappear !"
I raised my eyebrows. " 'Of course' ? Um, Mum .. You don't really go around telling objects what you want it to do," I paused. "At least not in this world."
She frowned at me. "All right, now run along."
Disappear, wings, I thought, looking at the wings. With a shimmer, the wings vanished.
I ran up the remaining steps and stopped in front of the closed door of the guest room. I steadied my breathing. "Alright, you can do it. Just explain, he'll understand," I tried to assure myself. To no avail, unfortunately.
Before I could change my mind about apologizing, I knocked briskly and burst into Nathan's room. "Nathan, I'm sorry !" I exclaimed. No response. I looked around the room. There was no one in it. My pulse started to race.
His clothes and belongings were still here. He hadn't run away, that's for sure. But where was he?
"Nathan?" I managed to force out. My voice came out as a half-croak-half-squeal. Sounding like that drove me into a deeper panic. I only sounded like that when I was extremely terrified or worried. I had last seen him enter the room. He hadn't gone out of the room since then.
"Could he have .." I trailed off in horror and raced to the window. It was tightly latched. I pushed it open and stuck my head out. I looked down, hoping that I wouldn't see what I dreaded with all my heart.
There was nothing. Relief washed over me. So Nathan hadn't jumped off the window, either. Where was he then ?
CLIFFHANGER. Well, before you fall off I'll update. That's for sure. Peace, love and sour cream, Aretha xx
