I looked over at the DSB. Words were on the surface of the ball : Boy going to go into the canal of Wisteria Lane, prevent him from drowning
Wow. So the DSB could tell the future too? "That's my cue," I told Nathan before flying off.
"Wait!" He called. "Can I come with you?"
I nodded. I took his hand and pulled him with me. Cutting through the air with the weight of Nath wasn't as difficult as I thought it'd be. Anyway, I was more focused on the soft, warm touch of Nathan's hand. I wondered if he felt anything towards me.
As I flew down to Wisteria Lane, doubt surged through me. I wondered if I could help the boy. Wisteria Lane was not exactly my favorite place.
My DSB buzzed again. 'Go alone.'
I sighed and landed. "Nath," I started.
"No, I get it. I know," He smiled reassuringly. "Just holler if you need any help, alright?"
I nodded. Nathan leaned against the entrance of Wisteria Lane. I took a tentative step into the deserted lane. The moisture-sodden air invaded my nose immediately. I recoiled back in disgust.
My heartbeat quickened as I fully engulfed myself in the gloom of the lane. It was more like an alley, with its narrow, confining walls.
Paint peeled from the dilapidated walls framing the two sides of the dark lane, aiding shadows lurking about in secrecy. I turned back. Nathan was watching me. I knew that if anything happened to me here, Nathan would rush over. He had my back. Knowing that relaxed me a little.
"Ack!" I tripped over something. My hands encountered the damp algae wall of the lane as I tried to break my fall. "You alright there?" Nathan called out.
"Yes!"
I stood for a while, trying to get my eyes to adjust to the foreboding darkness. As soon as my eyes had adjusted, I saw that I had tripped over a couple of poles and boxes that were discarded in a jumble next to the dumpster on the right, creating an eyesore to the already narrow lane.
Nearby, I could hear the faint sound of water. I walked towards it.
As I grew nearer, the sound grew louder and louder. I was pretty sure that I was right in front of the canal now. I could faintly see the raging waters churning and toiling in the canal, pulsing like a sea monster. I felt sick to my stomach. I stood there, peering over to see if the boy had come. All I had to do was to convince him not to go into the canal. Who in their right mind would, anyway?
Suddenly, I heard a helpless whimper. I jerked back, trying to find the source of it.
"Shut up, girly boy. Do it. Prove to us you're not some snivelling idiot," A cold voice snapped.
"Yeah, you don't wanna be beaten up, do you? That would be fun, actually," a drawling voice added.
I heard gasping noises. The person who made the noises was obviously trying not to cry."I'll do it," A boy's voice resonated through the whole lane. His voice was high-pitched and seemed forced.
"Go ahead then, girly, do it."
I listened to this all behind a discarded box. I felt my eyes widen. The boy wasn't voluntarily doing it. He was doing it so he wouldn't get beaten up by some uncouth hooligans. I could see the sillhouette of two burly teenagers near the entrance of the lane. Fingers of terror slithered up my back and threatened to choke me. That was where Nathan was waiting.
"Nathan'll be fine," I told myself firmly. I had to focus on my task. The boy was preparing to lower himself into the canal. I heard his ragged breathing ..It filled me with dread. I had to do something, but my mind was blank.
"You're the snivelling idiot, doing that to a little kid," I heard a voice say. That voice. It was Nathan's.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! I screamed in my head, as if Nathan could hear it.
'Trust me.' Nathan's voice filled my mind. My jaw dropped. We could talk telepathically ? Seriously, what else did I not know about this Darogarylia thing?
"I would shut up if I were you," the drawling voice sneered. My heartbeat quickened.
"Why should I?" Nathan asked. I fought back the lump of trepidation in my throat as I detected the tremor in his voice.
"Whoa, fiery one we got here, Colin. Should be fun seeing him writhe in pain."
Exactly how far was Nathan going to go with this?
"Let me go!" Nathan snapped. Oh gosh. They were going to beat him up.
'Go! Take the boy,' Nathan's urgent voice filled my mind.
Nathan was distracting the bullies, I realized, so that I could help the boy escape. The faster I did it, the less time Nathan would be beaten up.
"Ugh!" Nathan groaned. I heard him cry out in agony. Tears stung my eyes. I would come back for him later.
"Psst!"
The boy turned. I beckoned him closer. I could make out tear tracks staining his cheeks. "I'm going to help you. You have to trust me, alright? Close your eyes."
The boy hesitantly closed his eyes. I couldn't risk him knowing about my powers. "Don't open your eyes. You'll die if you do," I warned him.
'I'm a Sykes and can fly.'
"Where do you live?" I asked the boy as soon as we were in the air. I was gripping his hands tightly. "Montford Avenue.. Number three," He shakily answered, eyes squeezed shut.
I flew him back home. "Open your eyes," I told him after my wings had disappeared. "Go back home now. Don't wander around at night. Just don't. It's dangerous," I said firmly. The boy nodded, staring at me with wide eyes. He was as tall as my waist.
Without another word, he scampered inside his house. "He didn't even say thank you," I muttered crossly before I remembered. Nathan.
