Meant To Soar

Chapter Twenty-Three

  Dee stared at me, her expression unreadable. My heart hammered wildly against my chest. "I meant that, um.."

  "Playing tag?" Dee asked me, a mischeivous glint in her eyes. I gave her an incredulous look. This girl was something. But hey, I was pretty glad she didn't catch my original meaning. I sub-consciously smiled and raised an eyebrow. Well.

  "It's on, Cindy Sykes. So, where to?" I asked her.

  "Hmm.. why not we just go forward?"

  "Sure."

  Suddenly, a strange look crossed Cindy's face. She muttered something under her breath and was silent for a while. I gently touched her shoulders. "Dee?"

  "Um, yeah, sorry. It's just that, um.. Can you keep a secret?"

  I opened my mouth to answer, but she quickly cut in.

  "Okay, I know you can. It's like, nine o'clock already, so we have to hurry."

  She started running and I followed, still in a befuddled state. Where was she going?

  She eventually reached a hill. Instead of walking over it, we went around it. We reached a hole on the side of the hill, mostly covered with plants. Dee wordlessly beckoned me to go in. I must have seemed hesitant then, because she went first.

  I had a terrible feeling about this. Should I go in together with her?

  "Are you too afraid?" Dee's voice rang out, teasingly.

  I clenched my fists. No way was I losing out to a girl. I dropped down to my knees and crawled in after her, silently cursing myself for wearing shorts.

  We crawled on for a while. The dirt in the ground was digging into my knees, and I was sure it was pretty bloody by now due to the occassional sharp stone. But still, I kept going. I was not going to fail my ego.

  Soon, the 'tunnel' ended and lead to a grassy plain. My jaw dropped.

  "Cindy.." I started.

  "Yeah?" She answered, smiling.

  "You do know that this isn't real, right?" I tentatively asked. A hole in a hill, leading to a grassy plain. It was definitely not the other side of the hill, nor any place that I know of. So, where were we?

  "He said it was purely by magic that we could come..I knew you were like us, somehow, so I figured you could come too."

  He?
