"Remember.. Stay close to Nathan, okay?" Mum reminded me for the umpteenth time. I rolled my eyes.

"Okay, Mum.."

"Don't look at me like that, I want you to be safe. This is your first time going out at night as Darogarylia. Do NOT lose your DSB," Mum nagged and chided tirelessly.

I drew in a breath, impatience overwhelming me. Nathan stood off to the side of the kitchen, watching us. His eyes looked vacant and sad at the same time. I knew his mind was on his parents, who had failed to show him the concern and care Mum expressed towards my well-being whenever she could.

"Here, Dee, bundle up," Mum tossed me my black and red sweater and a scarf.

When I was bundled up to Mum's satisfaction, she handed Nathan a Ziploc bag overflowing with different flavoured cookies, from chocolate chip to double mint, in case we got hungry.

I was glad when we were finally out of the house. After breathing in the stuffy kitchen air, the cool night air felt good against my clammy skin.

"Dee, c'mon."

Nathan started jogging briskly in the direction of the woods. I ran after him, struggling to keep up. My breath came in short puffs and despite the cold air, sweat trickled down my face.

We reached a clearing in the forest. It was not dark although it was nighttime. I looked around the clearing, taking in my surroundings. And then I knew why it wasn't dark in the clearing.

"Nathan!" I gasped,"The flowers, they're.. they're glowing!"

"Yeah, well.."

"How's that even possible?" I marveled. The flowers were glowing, causing the clearing to be illuminated in different colours, depending on the flower. It was eerie but beautiful.

"Magic..?" Nathan let the possibilty hang in the air. "Let's get to work, Dee."

'DSB, come to me.'

My DSB appeared in my hand, and as usual an inviting warmth spread through my palm.

Nathan's DSB was clutched in his hand too. We were just standing there, doing nothing.

"So, what do we do?" I asked.

"We wait," Nathan answered. He seemed serious about this whole Darogarylia thing.

All of a sudden, Nathan's DSB started humming and buzzing. Nathan stared at it intensely for a minute and then looked up at me. "That's my cue. Meet me back here."

Nathan walked to a river which I hadn't even know was in the clearing and jumped in. "Oh yeah..Paynes are excellent swimmers," I muttered.

My DSB started to hum and buzz a few seconds later. I stared at the DSB intensely like Nathan had done previously.

'Fly to the right of the clearing. Put out the fire.'

The words swam on the surface of my DSB. I stared at it, dumbfounded. "How the heck am I supposed to put out a fire?" I wondered aloud.

The words fizzed and were replaced by new words. 'Bring water from the river. Use big, dry leaves from the ground to carry the water.'

Easy enough. I took a deep, calming breath. In through the nose, out through the mouth.

I scrounged around for dry leaves with sides that curled upwards enough to allow plenty of water to be carried in it.

I picked up two leaves and filled it with water. Thankfully, the leaves didn't crumble when I filled them. The water slopped dangerously to the side of the leaves.

'I'm a Sykes and can fly.'

I was engulfed with the familiar blinding light and I felt light enough to be swept up by the slightest breeze. I gazed over to the right of the clearing and saw a small area of orange. The fire. For a moment I hovered in mid-air, transfixed by the brilliance of the orange flames against the darkness of the night.

My DSB started to hum urgently, snapping me out of my brief reverie.

'Right,' I thought hard.

'Faster!' I willed myself, tightening my hold on the leaves as I zoomed in the direction of the fire.
