Chapter Seventeen :

As I flew over to the area of orange, my breath caught in my throat. A wild dog was caught in a ring of fire. The ring was small so that it enclosed around the wild dog just enough to not touch its fur. The flames were dancing around the poor dog, gleeful that it had captured its prey. The dog was whimpering. It backed away from the fire in front of it just to have the orange clutches of fire - from the fire raging behind it - wrap its fiery fingers around its tail. The dog yelped helplessly.

The wailing of the dog was wrenching my heart. I flew closer to the fire. The heat emitting from the fire caused me to break into a sweat, partly from trepidation and a bigger part of it from the scorching heat that attacked my whole being. For a normal person, the heat would've been unbearable. I was a Sykes and could resist the heat of fire.. And for me to be affected by such heat greatly was an obvious sign that I needed to sharpen the strength of my powers.

Without further hesitation, I dived down so that I was right above the dog. I poured the water from one of my leaves into its tail. Instead of water, the liquid pouring onto the tail was a substance that was translucent, seemingly frozen with something cold as evident from the immediate fizzling of the fire on the wild dog's tail.

I glanced down at the liquid in the other leaf. It looked like water. Without thinking, I poured it around the circle of fire surrounding the dog. Just like before, the liquid poured down as the translucent, frozen liquid. I decided to ponder about the liquid later, though. Right now, my biggest concern was the ring of fire I was trapped in together with a wild dog in the woods, at night. Sure, the circle had grown bigger after I poured the liquid around the outline, giving me and the wild dog more space to move around, but there was still the rest of the fire to take care of. The wild dog huddled closer to my leg. It was the splitting image of the wild dog that had almost attacked me a few weeks ago. "If you had killed me then, I wouldn't have been here to save you, you idiotic damn dog," I muttered.

'I'm a Sykes and can fly,' I thought hard, picking up the dog. It nestled into my arms without complaint. It whimpered and trembled as its eyes reflected the orange beasts that were licking its way towards us. My skin was damp with sweat by now and the dog was panting heavily.

I felt the flash of light and started feeling light. The dog started squirming in my arms but I clutched him to me. As soon as we were in the air, I flew the dog far away from the fire. As I let go of him a few meters away from the fire, I swear I could see a glint of appreciation in it's pitch black eyes. Maybe I was seeing things.. Whatever. I had to put out the fire before it harmed more animals or plants.

I flew back to the fire. I stared at it from above, wondering how the heck I could put it out.

All of a sudden, Mum's words rang in my ears. "Why, darling, OF COURSE you make it disappear!"

I was doing the job of a Darogarylia. I was practically in Darogars, wasn't I? It was stupid, yes, but I've got nothing to lose. "Disappear!" I shouted out feebly. I looked around, embarrassed.

"Get a grip, Dee. For goodness' sake, there's no one here to watch you," I muttered to myself crossly.

"FIRE, WOULD YOU PLEASE DISAPPEAR? PLEASEEE, PUT YOURSELF OUT OR SOMETHING YOU IDIOT!'" I roared with all my might. I didn't know what came over me, I just felt frustrated. The fire continued raging on. I saw red. It seemed like the fire was taunting me, daring me to put it out.

"Stupid idiot," I said.

"ARGH!" I yelled, very pissed off. I outstretched my clenched fists, as if landing a punch on an invisible enemy. It was something I had always done when I was angry. It somehow made me feel better.

I felt a tingling sensation run through my arms. I unclenched my fists, stared at them, and the next thing I knew, the translucent liquid was shooting out of my finger tips and onto the fire below. I felt dominant over this new kind of power. Without thinking twice, I directed the liquid towards the rest of the raging flames, quickly putting them out. Pretty soon, the ground of the area surrounding me was covered with a thin film of the frozen, translucent substance. I surveyed my work in mid-air, feeling satisfied but stunned. What happened to me when I outstretched my arms? Was this a power that every Sykes had?
