Evanston, Illinois. It was a small town about 30 minutes from Chicago.
I would continue to drive until we got to Chicago, but the roads shut down due to a large crash. The only way to get to Chicago was either walking or by that road.
Arvin cleared his throat quietly to get the attention of the receptionist in the motel, startling the poor old man near to death. "Oh! My apologies. Didn't see you kiddos walk in." The man said as I gave him a warm smile.
"It's alright sir. We'll just have a room for tonight." I said as the man smiled, his eyes vanishing as he did. He reached under the desk, taking out a key and handing it to Arvin, who had been silent the whole time.
He always seemed to do that around complete strangers.
We didn't bother to bring our bags into the room, since we were already in our pajamas. It was probably around 10 PM, and I was beat.
I laid down next to Arvin, who smiled as he wrapped his arms around me. I hummed quietly at the gesture as he rubbed my back, his cheek resting in my forehead.
"Goodnight Arvin." I said quietly as he sighed almost silently, kissing my forehead.
"Goodnight Emily." He answered as I closed my eyes, nuzzling my face into the crook of his neck.

Arvin woke me up with several kisses on the cheek and forehead. I groaned, smiling slightly as I stretched, Arvin flipping himself on top of me. I laughed as he smiled, lifting me up, his forehead resting on mine.
"You ready for Chicago, darling?" Arvin asked with a smile as I bit my tongue, nodding ecstatically.
"Ready as I'll ever be." I said as Arvin rolled off the bed, taking me with him.
The energy he had had changed since last night. He seemed so happy to finally be somewhat free, a joy surrounding his aura. And it was a very good thing for him that of us.
We went to hand the old man the keys, stopping when we realized he wasn't there. I frowned, looking around for the man.
"Hello?" I called out as Arvin frowned next.
"Maybe he's in the back." He suggested as I looked over the desk, gasping in horror as I dropped the keys.
On the ground was the old man, his face frozen in fear as his neck gushed blood, his face bleeding along with other parts of his body. Arvin looked over, his eyes widening as the man tried to scream for us to help.
"Emily we gotta go!" Arvin said as he grabbed my arm, but I merely shook my head.
"We-We can't leave him Arvin!" I said as Arvin looked at me, a easing look in his eyes that said we had to.
"We don't gotta choice Emily. It's too late for him. We need to go." I looked down at the old man one last time, a sad expression crossing my face.
And for the first time in a few weeks, I prayed that the man would be sent somewhere good. Arvin took his hand in mine as we ran out the door and into our car, where he quickly drove us away.
After a few moments of silence, I saighed, shaking my head. "That poor old man... he didn't do nothing to deserve that." I said with a friend as Arvin huffed through his nose, resting a hand on my knee.
"Its gonna be okay, darling. I know this may seem harsh but... He was gonna pass any day." Arvin said as I pursed my lips together, nodding in agreement.
"He shouldn't have gone like that though... He shoulda gone in his sleep, a peaceful passing. Not a torturous one." I said as Arvin looked at me, the once happy look he had when he woke up, not clouded by a sorrowful expression.
I felt terrible for what happened. I didn't even know the old man's name, and yet I felt I had done something wrong by letting him suffer there, drowning in his own blood.
I wish I could have stopped it from happening, but sadly, I knew I couldn't. The second whoever touched that poor man, his life was over.
I wiped away a year I felt fall, holding back the rest as we drove in silence. "How about we stop at a park? Before we get to Chicago." I suggested as Arvins smile reappeared.
"Sounds wonderful."

If I had never known better, I'd say Arvin and I had a thing for being alone a lot in places that should be populated.
And I guess to me and him, it was a good thing. We found ourselves once again parked in front of a lake, sitting side by side on the hood of the car that didn't belong to us.
My head rested on Arvin's shoulder, a smile on my face as I held his hand tightly in mine.
"What should we do when we get to Chicago? We won't be there for very long, only a week or less because then it's off to Canada." I said as Arvin thought for a moment.
"Anything I can do with you, Emily, and Ill be just fine." He said with a smirk as I huffed out a laugh, rolling my eyes as I nudged him, causing Arvun to chuckle.
"You're full of it, Arvin Russell." I said with a laugh as I sighed, slipping off the hood. I heard Arvin chuckle as I opened the drivers door, turning on the radio.
As "Devil In Disguise" started to play, I swung my hips slowly from side to side as Arvin jumped off the hood, walking over to me.
I saw a smile on his face that meant he was up to no good, and as I straightened up I felt his hands grab my hips, spinning me around so I faced him. A giddy laugh escaped me as Arvin smiled, swaying around with me before we started to dance.
And may I add, terribly. It was quite obvious both of us had two left feet, but it only made us howl with laughter.
Arvin and I's laughter faded as he took a single step close to me, his hands reaching under my hair and grabbing the back of my neck, pulling me into a soft, quick kiss.
I bit my bottom lip, a silly smile plastered on my face as I hummed to the song before jumping around Arvin, his laughter echoing in the park as I sang.
I took Arvin's hands in mine, shuffling around, our shoes creating indents in the Earth, my cheeks hurting from smiling so hard.
If I'll be honest, this was the happiest I had ever been. When I was with or even around Arvin, every bad emotion seemed to go away when his smile appeared. And that's what made everything I've been through worth it.
Because, even if I was going out of my mind, Arvin's smile could bring me back.
As the song came to an end, I fell into Arvin's arms, my hands wrapping around his neck as I smiled, my chest rising and falling as I gasped for air, the smile still on my face.
"Y-you know.." Arvin said, stuttering as he breathed for air as well. "you have a lovely voice." He continued as I looked up at him through my lashes, biting my lower lip again.
"You think I do?" I said, blushing as he rolled his eyes, nodding.
"I know you do."
