Arvin blinked, and I wasn't sure if he was processing the question or he didn't hear me because of how quiet I had asked. I crossed my arms, looking down at my feet before back up at him.
His hand, which was on the bag still, dropped to his side. He cleared his throat, takingn off his hat and staring at it before slowly.
He nodded.
I stared at him for a moment before I cleared my own throat, looking at the mirror which was besides me. "How many?"
"Emily-"
"How may, Arvin?" I said a bit louder, an expression of regret crossing my face when Arvin flinched, but barely.
"F-Four... Before we met.." He answered almost silently as my eyes widened, a hand running through my hair.
"Four?" I repeated as he nodded. I stammered for a moment before Arvin looked up at me.
"Look Emily. The people that I killed deserved what happened to them. I mean- the preacher that was new to the church I went to back home he... He got my little sister pregnant. She hanged herself, Emily!" Arvin said as I stopped, staring at him with shock.
"W-What about the others?" I said hesitantly as Arvin rubbed his face, sitting down in the couch.
"A couple... Said they were going to help me... We stopped at a lake and... I saw a gun in the husband's pants and I-I panicked.. shot him through the window... The wife.. she pointed a gun at me and I shot her. When she went to shoot me it was just a blank.." Arvin said as I sat next to him, placing a hand on his knee.
"The wife.. was the sister of the sheriff. I ran to the windows and he found me. I don't know how I survived.. but when he went to shoot me I got him in the gut... And then I got a ride but a nice guy.. brought me up to Cincinnati.. and-"
"That's when I found you..." I continued as Arvin looked at me, his eyes red as he looked like he was about to cry. He nodded slowly as I brought him into a tight hug.
He shoved his face into my neck, and I could hear his attempts to stop crying because of how bad he felt.
"Im-Im sorry I didn't tell you, Emily... I-I should have told you." Arvin said as I shook my head.
"Arvin it's okay. I understand why... If you told me the day we met I probably would have kicked you out of fear I'd be next." I said, holding back a chuckle.
Arvin broke away from the hug as I heard him sniff. I placed my hand on his cheek, wiping away the single tear that fell from his eye.
"I'm not angry that you didn't tell me, Arvin." I said with a weak smile. Arvin smiled back, his lips pressed together in a thin line.
"You did what you thought was right in the moment, and if I was angry at you for wanting revenge because someone was the reason your sister died, then I might as well just get up and leave." I said as Arvin stayed silent, looking into my eyes.
"Y-you aren't even a little mad?" He said quietly as I thought for a moment before shaking my head.
"Not even a little."
