"pass the ball here you dumbass!" mattia hollered at his younger brother who was running around with the basketball like an idiot. "no! i'm done playing with you. you take things too seriously." gianluca, mattia's younger brother hollered as he kicked the ball towards mattia.
the older boy chuckled as his little brother strolled back inside the house and to the kitchen. mattia figured it was time to start leaving for school. he grabbed the ball, leaving the court and tossing the basketball in the shed where it landed in the corner of the small room.
"matti, perchè hai fatto arrabbiare gianluca?" (mattia, why did you make gianluca upset?) mattia's mother asked as she put gianluca's school bag down on the seat infront of her. "i didn't, we were just playing and he got upset." mattia tried to pass it off as the truth, but it was evident that he and his mom both knew he was just lying through his teeth.
"hurry up and start walking to school, and please, e togli quella stupida cosa." (hurry up and start walking to school, and please, take that stupid thing out.) she said, pointing to mattia's lip and nose ring. he rolled his eyes, carefully taking them out and stuffing them in his pocket to put on later when he was away from his mom
this was mattia's first official year of high school. his freshman year didn't go so well. he had moved in the middle of the school year, making catching up on work extremely difficult. the only hard part about moving, was his educational reasons. he had no friends that would miss him or anything like that. so he seemed fine.
he and his family used to live in a different part of new jersey before moving to totowa. which they all liked better.
after, his parents had finally enrolled him back into school during the summer. but now, he was a completely different person.

"maiya! wake your butt up or you can scooter to school!" kairi yelled to his younger sister. kairi huffed once he realized it was pointless because maiya was fast asleep and not waking up on her own. "don't make me call mom." kairi said in a sing-song voice as he knocked on her door. he laughed when he heard a loud thud and the bathroom door in maiya's room swung open.
"morning sweet mother of mine." kairi smiled, rubbing his face tiredly as he looked at his mom. "hi kai." she smiled, i leaned over. kissing her cheek softly and stealing a piece of toast from maiya's plate. "i'll hold this for her, she doesn't have time to eat right now but she can while we're walking." kairi said to her, she smiled.
"okay kai, love you," she said to him. putting both her hands on the sides of kairi's face, kissing his forehead. kairi had to bend down a bit to reach her, but they made it work. he hugged her tightly before taking maiya's small container of breakfast and going to the front door.
"you said bye to ma?" kairi asked as he handed the container to maiya so she could start eating. "yeah," she replied shortly. yawning and covering her mouth. "you better hurry up and jog before you're late to first period." kairi said, maiya huffed tiredly. quickly speed walking down the sidewalk. kairi reached in his basketball shorts pocket, grabbing his phone to say bye to his dad since he didn't get a chance to this morning.
