Chapter 21 - Memory Lost

3rd Person POV

"Hey, Barry, pizza's gonna be another 10 minutes." Joe tells Barry, putting a plate of steak down on the table

"That's alright." Barry says, pulling out his phone and checking the time. "They should be here soon." Cecile brings a hot chocolate over to the table and puts it down in the empty seat next to Barry. "Thanks." Barry tells her

"You're welcome." Cecile says with a smile, sitting down in her seat across from Barry. Barry frowns, turning his head and shooting a text to Iris. "You okay, sweetie?"

"Uh, yeah." Barry says, putting his phone down on the table. "I thought they would have been here by now. I wonder what's taking them so long."

"I'm sure it's nothing." Cecile tells him. "New drivers tend to drive slower."

"Yeah, you're right." Barry says

Joe brings over a plate of vegetables and places it on the table. "She gonna eat veggies?"

"Only if there's ranch." Barry says with a small laugh. Then, his phone rings. "Oh, it's Iris." He says, grabbing his phone and answering. "Hey, Iris, you guys almost here?" Barry jumps to his feet quickly. Cecile and Joe look at him, startled. "Slow down, slow down...what happened to Mack?"

45 Minutes Earlier...

"Alright, sweetie, now at the light you're just gonna keep going straight." Iris says in the passenger seat

"Okay." Mack says in the driver's seat. She continues to drive towards the green light at a large intersecton. But then the light turns yellow

"Slow down." Iris tells her daughter. "Slow down."

Mack presses the brake as the light turns red. It's late at night and the two are getting some driving practice in before heading over to Joe's house for a very late dinner that was taking place at 10 pm

Mack looks around the road and sees that there's not a single other car around. "There's no one else around." She tells her mom. "I could have gone through that yellow light and we'd be almost there."

"MacKenzie, look at me." Iris tells her and Mack looks over at her mother. "Your life is a precious gift. Any life is a precious gift. When you are driving, you are in control of that precious gift. And it can go away in a snap. When you are at the wheel, you always make sure that you are being careful and mindful. Red lights take seconds – a minute at most – and it's better to lose seconds of your life waiting than to lose your life in seconds. Do you understand?" She asks

"Yeah, I do." Mack whispers, turning her head forward and looking at the light which had turned green sometime when they were talking

Iris looks down at her phone as Mack begins to drive. She squints her eyes as a bright light shines to her side. And when she looks over, another car hits theirs right on her side

And all goes black

Memory...

A car is flipped over on the road, smoke coming out of the engine as ambulances and police cars and firefighters work on the car. The firefighters had just rescued a young girl out of the back of the car and handed her off to the medical workers. The parents from the car are dead but they're getting loaded into ambulances anyway. The police and paramedics are also working with the person who crashed into the car and flipped it over
