"So you want to join the Hero Club?" The club's president, Fuu, asked you. You were a bit timid with the idea of joining something called the Hero Club, especially one full of girls.
"Yes... I do." Your answer was true, at the very least. No hesitation needed. "The truth is..." You were timid not because you were worried about cooties or how you might end up in some sort of harem, no. There was another reason you were timid around the fact that the Hero Club is full of nothing but girls. "I've been... raised around heroes my whole life. My parents would tell me that being a hero means a great deal of honor and respect to you and your family." Fuu's eyes glared into your soul, as though you were on trial and she was the judge. "In fact... I got to meet such a hero." With a deep breath, you decided to tell her your story.
----
Truth be told, you were far from a normal boy. No, you didn't have superpowers, but your family were a part of an organization called the Taisha, which oversaw worship over the Shinju-sama, your god. You weren't told a lot about the Taisha or Shinju-sama when you were young, just that your family provides for the heroes.
See, in your vocabulary, hero means something other than, well, a regular old hero. Heroes were young girls who fight and eventually sacrifice themselves for the Shinju-sama, and as such, are treated with honor and respect. You even remembered attending the funeral of at least one hero.
At that age, you were shown the wonders of heroes and had begun rummaging through the history books to read up on heroes of the past. You often drew what the heroes would look like if they had no pictures or depictions and hang them up on the ceiling so that, when you slept, you'd see them smiling down upon you.
Your parents noticed your newfound hobby and, with some chat with the other Taisha, decided to give you your first official task as a Taisha. Your excitement went through the roof. Finally! You get to work alongside the heroes, acting on their whims and making them happy.
That's when you met the hero you were supposed to placate, Sonoko Nogi.
She was not like any of the heroes you saw in your books. Far from it, even. She wore a long, purple shrine robe, though you noticed that the skirt and one of the sleeves were flat. She had no limbs, and her only hand was attached to a monitor of sorts. Her face was heavily bandaged, to the point where the only part of her face you saw was her right eye and her mouth.
You felt nervous. Scared. Unsure. Pity. Were your parents messing with you when they said how you were blessed with meeting the most powerful hero in the world? Was she an actual hero, but her battles caused her to be some broken mess that you see before you?
"Ah... Why are you crying?" Sonoko asked you. You blinked and felt the tears in your eyes. You quickly wiped them. No sense in crying in front of a hero.
"I-it's nothing. I..." You had to pick your words carefully. "I'm sorry." You bowed your head. Regardless of whether or not she's a joke or not, you remembered that she is to be worshipped as a goddess. It's your job to placate her.
You soon felt a hand on your head, stroking your hair. You looked up to her. She's smiling down upon you.
"You don't have to be sorry." She patted you on the head and you rose up a little. "What's you're name?"
"It's [y/n]."
"Ehehe... I'm gonna call you [y/nn]." She giggled softly. You soon began to smile. Your job was simple. Just sit by her side and converse with her. You instantly realized why you were given such an easy task. Because she seemed lonely and needed a friend.
