Chapter Fourteen
The world literally froze.
“W-What?” I whispered.
“Honey, I know it’s hard to take in, but just listen,’ Dad said, soothingly. “A truck accidentally went into the wrong lane, and the truckdriver hit your Mum-
‘I am going to KILL that goddamn truckdriver,” growled James.
“-as I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, he hit your Mum, and they got into a major accident. Ethan’s over at the hospital now,” continued Dad.
“Well, let’s go visit her!” I cried.
We all stood up, and Harmony made her way over to me, with a sympathetic face
“You gonna be okay, hon?” she asked, pulling me into a strawberry-scented hug.
I nodded. “Yep. As long as she wakes up, healthy, I’ll be totally fine.”
We drove to the hospital, and we all rushed out to the lobby.
“Amanda Hall,” Dad told the receptionist, breathlessly.
The receptionist eyed all of us. “You’re ALL her family?”
“Would you just tell how to get to the damn room, already lady?” snarled Jacob.
Audrey quickly put her hand on his arm, and calmed him down. The receptionist looked intimidated, and just nodded.
“Second floor, room 6,” she stammered.
Dad nodded, and he took off, us on his heels. We took the elevator (all of us crammed into the tiny elevator that was only supposed to fit four people), and stumbled out of the elevator.
We hurried to room 6, and burst through the door.
Ethan was sitting next to Mum’s bed, holding her pale hand. His head immediately snapped up when he heard us coming in, and his face broke into a relieved smile when he saw that it was us.
I immediately rushed to Mum’s side.
“Omigosh, Mum,” I whispered.
Her face was wrinkled, and she was ghastly pale. Her hair was messy and knotted. Usually it was polished and shiny-hair that I was always envious of.
“What did he do to you?” I whispered, smoothing out the wrinkles on her face.
I felt two strong arms hug me from behind, and turned my face to see it was James, who was looking at me with a worried expression.
“You okay?” he whispered.
I nodded, silently. A single tear dripped down my cheek, and James used his thumb to wipe it away.
It was great to brothers like mine to comfort you at times like these. Even if they were going through pain and grief through-my brothers always stayed strong and tough.
He hugged me, tightly, pressing his face into my hair. “It’s going to be alright, Ade.”
James released me a moment later, and I exhaled.
“I think I’ll go for a walk,” I announced. “To uh...clear my head and get some fresh air.”
Audrey flashed a smile. “Good idea.”
I strode out of the room, heaving a huge sigh. I jogged out, and breathed in the fresh air. Mum had to pull through. For me. For the family.
Suddenly I felt a surge of anger. Why did fate have to do this?
