Chapter Sixteen

♫Adrianna♫

My eyes flew open, and I scanned my surroundings. Where was I?

Slowly, my vision sharpened, and I recognised the purple walls and the pictures of me and my family. Ohhhh, it was my bedroom.

“Hey, she’s awake!” came a familiar voice.

I glanced up to see that it was Ethan who had spoken it. I heard a rush of footsteps, and the rest of my family came in.

Dad smiled, relieved. “Oh good. You were out cold for at least several hours, darling.”

I chuckled, shaking my head. Then I sat up.

“You know, I had the weirdest dream,” I told them. “I had a dream that Mum had been in a car accident, and then she went into a coma! And then we were all worried, and then the doctors did tests on her-and said she would never wake up! And then Dad signed papers to take Mum off life support! How weird is that?”

I glanced up to see that all their faces were grave and upset. Wait...what?

“Why are you all looking so grouchy?” I asked.

Audrey bit her lip. “Ade...that wasn’t a dream.”

“Oh, fine then, it was a nightmare, geesh,” I replied, shaking my head and rolling my eyes.

Then, it was that moment, when I realised Mum wasn’t in the room. I immediately froze up.

“W-Where’s Mum?” I stammered, panic rising in me.

Liam then said “In Heaven”, and I wasn’t sure if I supposed to hear that. I started choking for breaths, hoping that what he said wasn’t true.

‘Where’s Mum,” I repeated-except with anger clearly written in it.

Harmony stepped forward, and took my hands. She looked at me, soothingly. “Sweetie, that dream you had was real. Everything that happened in that dream was real. You passed out from learning of the news that they had to take your Mum off life support, and here you are.”

Tears formed in my eyes, and collapsed back onto my bed, sobbing. “She’s dead?”

Harmony stepped back, allowing James to come forward. He grabbed my hands, and then enveloped me into a tight hug. I sobbed into his shoulder, making a very damp patch in his shirt.

When he released me, I stared at the damp patch.

“Whoops,’ I hiccupped, making him smile.

“It’ll dry,’ he answered, carefully wiping tears away from my face. “You okay?’

I nodded, slowly. ‘I’ll live.”

He chuckled, before stepping back.

“Sweetheart, do you need some space?” Dad asked.

I nodded. “Yeah, that’d be great. Thanks.’

Dad nodded, and then quietly ushered everyone to leave my room. I flopped onto my pillow, sighing. I was all cried out, so I didn’t need to cry anymore.

I couldn’t believe this. My Mum was gone. I didn’t even say goodbye to her. I’d just passed out. Why the hell did I pass out? Ugh, at least they could’ve waited to take her off life support for me to wake up! Seriously, some decency people!

I shut my eyes, exhaling loudly. I couldn’t bring myself to believe that my mum was gone. Forever. It just didn’t click in my head. I mean, I was so freakin’ used to seeing her around the kitchen, baking her delicious home-made cookies, cleaning the house, yelling at Liam to stop being a slob and clean his room...memories.
