"Clarke?" She looked up at the sound of her name, it was her mom, she ran to her, throwing herself in her arms and holding on tight, Abby held on a little longer, she hadn't seen her daughter in more than four years, it had been long, far too long. Clarke pulled back and looked at Aden's begging eyes.
"She's still in surgery." She whispered.
"What happened?" He asked
"She was making herself food and burnt herself with oil, her arm and chest."
"Where were you!?" Aden screamed, "You should have been looking after her."
"I thought you were with her, you were supposed to be looking after her." Clarke fired back as heartedly
"You are bitch you know that, nothing but a drunk and freaking mess, no wonder nobody freaking likes you, no wonder you're freaking alone, Lexa would be ashamed of you." Aden screamed.
Clarke's breath got caught in her throat as a sob escaped her mouth, Lexa, how did he know about her? He wasn't allowed to talk about her, nobody was.
Clarke stepped forward, but her mother blocked her before she could do something she would regret, she knew later she would thank her mother, but right now she wanted to slap the hell out of Aden, she didn't care how scared he was, he didn't have the right to talk about her.
"Both of you, sit." Abby instructed and both sat on opposite sides of her. Abby had so many questions to ask, but remained quiet as she didn't think this was the time nor the place.
After four hours Marcus Kane, Abby' s colleague and maybe more than that, their relationship was still in the early phase, emerged from down the hall, Clarke was the first one up and meeting Marcus halfway.
Aden and Abby followed behind. "Her surgery went well and She's in recovery, we might need her to keep coming in depending on how her wounds heal."
"Can we see her?" Clarke asked.
"Yes, she's not awake yet, but you can wait with her while you fill out the paper work."
Clarke nodded and followed the Kane to the room. Clarke looked down, following the linoleum tiled floor, until Kane came to a stop, she looked up the first thing she saw was the hair, she hurried inside and froze on the side of the bed, watched as Aden kissed her cheeck and whispered something in her ear.
"It's her birthday." Clarke announced, "It's her birthday and she's in the hospital." she started chewing on her lower lip and her eyes welled up with tears.
Abby noticed and helped her outside. They walked the passage, Clarke took in her surroundings, this was it, the same hospital she had lost Lexa in and her mind was catching up, she wasn't in her home anymore, not safe in the comfort of her brick walled house.
"Clarke, Breathe." Abby whispered as she noticed her daughter taking shallow breaths and her hands shaking.
They finally made it outside, Abby found a bench for them to sit in.
"It's okay." Clarke whispered, "I'm okay... Madi is okay...Aden is okay... It's okay." She repeated over and over again for half an hour as she calmed down.
Abby watched her daughter, she felt nothing but sympathy for the woman in front of her, she looked like her daughter, even sounded like her, but then she wasn't, this mantra was proof that that little girl who overwatered plants because she didn't know when to stop giving was gone.
"Hey." She whispered.
"Hi, mom." Clarke whispered absent-mindedly.
"Who are they?" Abby asked.
"They just came to my house, three weeks ago and they live with me now, Madi and Aden."
"You look so different, grown. I really missed you." Abby whispered,
"I'm sorry, I couldn't see anyone, and it was so hard, it's still hard, trying to forget her."
"Maybe you don't need to forget her, it's like me and dad, I miss him so much, but I've tried to forget him and doesn't work that way."
Clarke had no answer, she had always tried to forget about her, always, remembering hurts, it's mind numbing, it's like opening yourself up to uncontrollable pain, forgetting sucked but that she could control, the amount of pain she exposed herself too, that was having control and all the rest was like lighting herself on fire, she never stopped feeling the pain.
It would have been better to never grow up at all, as a child, life then was so simple. The only pain she ever felt was falling off her bike and hurting her knee, life then was so easy,
"She's asking for you," Aden appeared behind the two, Clarke got to her feet, "I told her to lie, to the doctors." Aden informed her, "She told them you were both making breakfast, it was an accident."
Clarke nodded as she made her way inside the hospital, as she went in, a gift shop was on her right, she went inside and looked around for a while, nothing catching her attention until she saw a big hug me teddy, she walked fast to it, afraid someone else might claim it before she could. After paying for it she walked to the room.
Madi looked so still, so still it tore her apart, tears raced down her cheeks and she suppressed a sob.
She walked inside, Madi had her eyes closed, what would have happened if she had lost her? How terrible it was to love something death could touch
She traced Madi's cheek and smiled through her tears as Green eyes met her own, In so many ways Madi reminded her so much of Lexa , so much that she just wanted to shield her from all of it, lock her up in tower somewhere where nothing, not even death could touch her.
She loved her so much that it hurt, she loved Aden too, she couldn't deny that but this green eyed girl in front of her would be the death of her.
"You came." Madi whispered, Clarke's brows furrowed and she traced her hand on the tear that had escaped the little girl's eye. "They always leave," Madi said.
"Not me, I promise. I'll be with you forever." She hadn't thought of what she was saying, but as the words left her mouth, she realized how much she meant them, she'd do anything to keep the kids safe, she'd follow them in the middle of the darkest night, in the fog she'd blindly follow.
They were all broken in some way no one else could ever really understand, and that made them stronger together.
"I have something for you." She pulled the pink hug me teddy out into the light and watched as Madi's eyes broke out into the biggest most greenest orbs she'd never seen, her mouth hanging as her left arm stretched out to the teddy.
Clarke pushed the big bear, almost as big as Maid into her arms and watched as the girl melted into it, closing her eyes Madi took in the smell of the bear, the soft texture against her cheek, it didn't matter that having it so close to her caused pain to her chest, she just wanted to hold it, forever.
"What you going to call her?" Clarke asked.
Madi pondered on the names, what would she call her, then it her. The way she was feeling right now, "Wonder." She whispered, snuggling her head into the bear as tears rushed down her cheeks.
"Happy birthday, princess." Clarke whispered.
