Harley Finley

The days have come and gone, now turning into a week. I found myself in the same position, beside Colten's hospital bed curled up in a ball on a chair, every time I asked myself what I had done to deserve this.

How could God grant me a love so strong only to hang it in front of my face as if a carrot on a stick?

The doctors were hopeful in the beginning. He lost a lot of blood but they were able to patch him up, now keeping him alive with a tube down every hole in his body.

It was difficult to see the strongest man I've known be laying in a supine position, not moving unless by hospital staff. Sometimes I'd assist the nurses, just so I could feel like I was doing something productive. It was difficult standing in the hallway, knowing they were giving him a sponge bath while I sulked.

"Hey, Harley." Nurse Lexi smiled as she entered the room. She gave me a quick glance, seeing my slumped over position and glossy eyes that never seemed to dry nowadays and her smile faded.

She had quickly become my favorite nurse - usually straight to the point with a bit of sass when she didn't agree with what Elijah would say. Plus, she was the only one in the city I had been able to vent to when my world seemed to be falling apart.

How we ended up all the way in New York City was beyond me. It made me wonder where the hell Drew intended on bringing us when he did capture us.

My mind would wander endlessly of the possibilities of what could have happened, it drove me literally mad, depressed and over all an anxious mess at any given noise thinking someone was going to take the remainder of my hope away from me.

It got to the point where Lexi would sit with me just so I could cry to someone who could actually speak back to me.

"Morning." I gave her a soft smile back before looking to my sweet, sweet Colten. The man who took a bullet for me.

"I finally found his parents, just like you asked me to." She announced, keeping her voice low to hide her impressive internet stalker skills from preying ears.

I let out a shaky sigh. "Have you called them yet?"

"I could but I assumed you'd like to." Lexi reached out with a small slip of paper in her hands. "Their names are Dawn and Roger. They ended up moving to Washington about eight years ago. It seems like Colten was their only son." She paused with a shake of her head, "I don't mean to sound crazy but I just thought that information would help."

I took the paper from her hand, looking to the ten digit number, even memorizing it just in case.

"Thank you. For everything, Lexi."

"Not a problem. Are Elijah and Chloe visiting today?" She hummed as she checked Colten's vitals like every morning she was on.

I slumped into my chair that probably had the impression of my ass stuck to it by now. "No. They had to go back home and figure out loose ends."

And by loose ends, I mean sell Jim's bike shop and pack their shit then get the hell out of dodge. Neither of them felt safe, especially after what had happened to Colten.

I barely even felt safe and I've been surrounded by security guards and hospital staff since it all happened.

"How's the ankle?" She pressed. "Have you been keeping it elevated?"

"Yes." I sighed to her. "I'm going to go for a walk."

I slowly stood to my feet, grabbing my crutches before almost stumbling to the ground. I looked at Colten one more time, grazing my fingers along his stubbled face and leaned down to place a gentle kiss to his forehead.
