Wake Up
≿━━━━༺☠━━━━
Colten Gunn

Everything was blackness. Even the dreams I had consisted of nothingness and everything all at once. It was as if I was blinded, not seeing the world but hearing it all around me, trying to imagine it but coming up short with my own memory of what the simplest thing looked like.

Nothing made sense until I heard Harleys sweet voice. She'd sit at my bedside almost 24/7, I could even feel her cold forehead on my arms at some point while she tried to cuddle into me.

I wanted to open my mouth to scold her and tell her to put a sweater on but my body was immobilized.

I'd hear her cry. Listening to her sobs were the hardest but it was the one thing that kept me awake, or whatever state I was in. She had made friends with one of the nurses, the only nurse that would sing softly to me while she moved my body around gently.

But something about today was different. There was no singing. No Harley. It was just the darkness and paralyzing fear that this was it.

Then her soft hand held my face so gently, rubbing her thumb under my eye.

"Good morning, Colten." Harley murmured softly, kissing my forehead. She lingered there, keeping her lips there until I could feel her frowning into me.

What I wouldn't give to wake up.

Fuck, I just want to wake up.

Please, dear God, let me wake up.

"I'm sorry I wasn't here earlier." She spoke to me as if I could speak back, every time she talked, she did that, acting as if I weren't a motionless body laying in this bed.

"I ended up meeting with one of Lexi's friends, Maddox. I'm sorry Doctor Bouchard. I guess he's getting married and the chief his fiancé hired quit. You know what that means right? Probably a bridezilla. I don't know but he pretty much asked me to cater."

Do you want to? I wanted to ask. I longed to speak back with her.

"There's just too much in the air right now and I- If you don't wake up, I don't know how I could get back to normal life." She held my hand, squeezing it tightly. "I really need you back, Colt."

I'm here, angel. I'm here.

There was a gentle knock to the door, followed by a woman's gasp for air and a soft choked sob. Harleys hand slid from mine as she placed it to the bed. The sound of her chair scrapping against the floor and the padding and tapping of metal was the only thing I could hear besides the woman's crying that kept getting closer until I was being touched all over.

"Oh, my sweet baby boy." My mother cried harder.

"I'll let you guys have some time with him." Harley finally spoke, talking as if she knew they were coming. Maybe my Angel was really looking out for me, going above and beyond to make sure I was surrounded by those that love me.

It's like a fucking funeral before I'm dead.

She thinks I'm going to die.

Fuck, I really need to wake up before she starts picking out caskets.

"No, Harley. Please stay. Unless you need a break but don't feel like we're pressuring you out." My father spoke softly, I could even hear the sadness in the retired army veterans voice.
