Life was starting to feel like normal again. Nothing abnormal had happened and Kai and Sukara had settled into their house quite well. Even though he and Jinora had worked things out perfectly fine, they had both agreed that Kai having his own space was for the best. Jinora was round a lot and Kai still went on missions, the only thing that changed was that he slept in Sukara's house.
Things with Sukara were seemingly going fine as well. The search for work was still coming up short but Sukara was starting to think that was due to her own stubbornness. She was spending a lot more time with her friends though, she would often help Korra out with her Avatar duties and she would spar Bolin when he asked. Kasa had turned out to be more than a one night stand as well, Sukara had decided to start introducing her to people, starting with Kai.
It had gone well, Kai was polite as usual even if he did throw the odd look Sukara's way as if to ask he if she was serious. Kasa and Sukara were going to go out after so she left the two of them alone to go and use the bathroom.
"Well she's..." Kai started, hesitating slightly as he decided on his words.
"Nice?" Sukara asked, hopeful that he'd like her, "pretty? A good person?"
"Yeah absolutely," he smiled awkwardly, "but I was gonna say, still here."
"Kai," Sukara exclaimed, checking around them in case Kasa had come back.
"Listen, you're right, she's great and all," Kai said, explaining himself, "and I wouldn't even question it if you were in a better head space about Kuvira, but you're not."
Sukara flinched a little at her name, he had a point, she was still in a lot of pain about losing Kuvira. She asked herself the same questions about Kasa a lot but she didn't want to believe the answers.
"I tried, she made her feelings very clear," Sukara told him, the words hitching in her throat a little, "it's time to get on with my own life."
"I know, which is why I'm asking is this wise?" Kai asked, looking at her with concern, "are you sure you're not going to fast with this?"
"I'm heartbroken, and Kasa makes me laugh," Sukara explained, "she helps make my days easier."
"Okay," Kai smiled, taking a seat on a stool near the counter, "I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
"Thanks for the concern," Sukara smiled back at him as she reached over and ruffled his hair, "but I'm fine. Really, there's no need to worry."
As they finished their conversation, Kasa re-emerged from the top of the stairs and came back down to join them.
"Are you ready to go?" Kasa asked, smiling sweetly at Sukara as she linked their hands together.
Sukara nodded as she took a step away from the counter to follow Kasa out the house.
"It was lovely meeting you Kai," Kasa called back as she waved from the door.
"You too," Kai waved back with a small chuckle.
She was sweet, he had to admit it. Sukara hadn't chosen badly, Kasa was pretty, kind, passionate about her work but, she wasn't Kuvira and thats what he worried about. Sukara loved Kuvira more than anything, it was hard to believe that she'd move on with someone so normal.
