The night couldn't get any worse for the family of bats and birds. As Batman distances his sidekicks from the danger, the only caped hero kept within his eyesight was his daughter, the new Batgirl donning the mantel Oracle had passed down to her.
Closing the video call, I swung over to meet my Father and Dick. "Another win for us then?" I chirped. My bright mood broke the cold tone my Father had and it softened as he finished speaking to Dick. "Blüdhaven needs you Dick."
"I know, I won't let you down. I promise."
My father stepped back just as Dick turned to leave Gotham. "Not saying goodbye Grayson?" I remark.
Nightwing turns to face me with an equally smug grin, "to that pretty face. I couldn't," he smooth talked, embracing me in a hug. When Tim and Barbara had gotten closer it was no surprise that I had landed in the arms of Dick, we had known each other the longest despite our age. The only other person I had been close with was wiped clean from this Earth. It was only just my Father had given him equal punishment. I felt no remorse for the Joker.
Dick rested his head on my own, hugging me tightly, "stay safe for me okay, and look after Bruce for us," he asked quietly.
I smiled and nodded as we pulled apart, "I promise Dickiebird."
His grin flashed warmly on his face as he planted a gentle kiss on my forehead. "I'll be waiting then."
He turned and leapt off the rooftop, deploying the grapnel gun at the latest moment to gather the greatest falling distance. As I watched him go I felt the voice in my head quieten at the thought of him being far far away, safe in Blüdhaven.
"Robin, I've found the Arkham Knight's headquarters. Are you ready?" My Father called over to me.
I joined his side and grinned, "never been better."
He smiled at my enthusiasm and I followed him to the Arkham Knight's headquarters. We had to rescue Gordon, it was the least we could do after Babs was murdered. Babs... Oh Tim. I couldn't take any more death in the family, no more. This ended tonight.
As my Father went ahead he commanded me to remain hidden in the grates below, staying out of sight in case a surprise intervention was needed. After he secured Gordon he waved his hand for me to join, but before I could the Arkham Knight held a gun to him. "This end's tonight old man."
"Jason?"
All it took was that name for me to spring from the floor and remove whatever body held my Father down. I tossed him aside and allowed my Father to stand, but as I stood to face the unmasked villain, the air in my lungs was swept clean, frozen instantaneously. Those emerald eyes, those kind and loving eyes.
"Jay?" I asked cautiously. I felt my knees weaken and my Father stepped forward to prevent me from falling.
"I'm sorry Rob, but it has to end like this. Step out of the way Rob," Jason firmly told me, his voice cold.
"But you died Jay, how.. how are you even here?" I hesitantly asked, less worried about his gun than my Father.
"It doesn't matter! Your old man let me suffer for a year then replaced me, he has to die! Don't make me kill you too!" Jason shouted at me.
