The following sunrise, I woke up with a hangover and thought about going down to the kitchen for a cup of tea.
That's when I realized I wasn't in bed alone. I turned around with fear and found Yulan sleeping soundly beside me. How did this happen? I covered my mouth to prevent myself from screaming and waking her up
It was terrifying to see her there and wonder what exactly had happened last night.
Just then, my brother barged in unexpectedly and caused a scene.
"Wow! Did you sleep with Yulan last night, bro?" he said with a judgmental look on his face.
I ordered him to leave, and he did, but not before telling me that Mom wanted us downstairs for an important announcement.
I woke Yulan up by taking away her pillow, and she stretched and gave me a smile. But I had no intention of smiling with her.
"What the fuck are you doing in my room?" I dragged her out of bed and pushed her to the door.
"Whoa, please calm down," she said, but I was furious..
"Calm down? Have you gone mad? Get out!" I pointed her to the door, and she left.
There was no chance that I could've actually asked my ex-girlfriend to be by my side in my intoxicated state. I had to freshen up before coming downstairs for the important meeting Mom had asked us to gather for.
Sophia was sitting closely beside my brother, looking irritated, but no one noticed because we were all clouded by our selfish desires.
Mom started talking, her eyes moving back and forth. "Tomorrow is very important. Tomorrow's my wedding anniversary with my husband. Have you all forgotten?"
The pause took five minutes of silence because we were all taken aback by her sudden statement.
"Fredrick, I would like to talk to your dad, please call him". Mom gave him an order.
Fredrick was unable to talk, perplexed by the urgency to phone someone who was already dead, but Sophia got up, grabbed Mom's hand, and promised to call Dad before the wedding anniversary happening tomorrow evening. Mom grinned and then left us grieving in silence.
"We are not doing that, right?" Fredrick spoke out immediately after Mom left us in the sitting room.
"What choice do we have? We can't tell her the truth, can we?" I growled at the end of my statement. It was frustrating to lie, and the more we did that, the bigger the lies became.
"Darn! I can't believe we have to plan an emergency wedding anniversary for Mom and our dead father," Fredrick exclaimed, angrily leaving the sitting room. Sophia left afterward, and some few minutes later, Yulan took her leave.
Mom can't find out the truth; the only way is to falsify everything. Dad can't wake from the dead either, and neither can anything be done to avert Mom from getting what she wants. We will have to get everything done by tomorrow morning. I pray nothing goes wrong.
