"You don't just steal a man's drumsticks, Juju," Jay said snarkily as he walked up to where Flynn and Julie were chatting at the latter's locker.
"I gave them back," Julie replied with a smile.
"Doesn't matter, the damage was done," Jay waved off, the corner of his mouth curling into a smirk as Julie scoffed.
"Julie said you and Luke worked on songs all weekend," Flynn said to Jay with a mix of curiosity and something else.
"Yeah, it was great," Jay said, his face suddenly glowing. "The three of us work great together, it was awesome."
"Yeah, we can show you some of the songs we wrote," Julie suggested and Flynn gave a look as if her answer was obvious.
                              Well, it was.
The three of them made their way to the music room, where Julie sat at the piano bench and Flynn stood in front of the piano next to Jay.
"-like it was flowing through me, just like when we wrote with Mom," Julie said as she sat. "This is the first song we wrote. Just a bit of a chorus."
Julie began playing the chords that led to the chorus of the song and Jay smiled at the familiarity of it, moving to stand between Flynn and Julie.
"Cuz we're standing on the edge of great"
                              "On the edge of great"
                              "Great"
                              "On the edge of great"
                              "Great"
                              "On the edge of great"
"Cuz we're standing on the edge of..."
Julie stopped playing and looked expectantly at Flynn.
"Wow!" Flynn said. "I like it! Definite Gaga vibes"
"Thanks!" Julie said, happy that her closest friend enjoyed her song.
"There's another song we finished over the weekend," Jay began, clapping Julie lightly on the shoulder as he spoke. "Definitely our anthem, yeah?"
"Yeah, for sure," Julie agreed. "It's something that my mom, Jay, and I were working on."
"Couldn't have finished it without Luke," Jay said with a smile, moving back to his previous position. The two girls shared a look that Jay didn't quite understand, but he ignored it as Julie began playing.
"And it's one, two, three, four times
That I've tried for one more night
Light a fire in my eyes
I'm going out of my mind"
"That's...That's beautiful," Flynn said genuinely, making Julie chuckle.
"Can't wait to put that one together with everyone's instruments," Jay said, an enthusiasm slipping into his voice that hadn't been heard before. "I really think that one will be a hit."
"Really?" Flynn asked, crossing her arms and looking expectantly at Jay. "Tell me more."
"What's there to say? I mean," Jay ran a hand through his hair. This much enthusiasm from him was rare, almost never seen before. In fact, the only people who had seen it were the Molinas when Jay was younger. As he grew older, the fire inside him slowly dimmed month by month, year by year. Yet in one week, an old band from the 90s had managed to come into his life and reignite that flame.
Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a wildfire.
"Something just happens when we're writing together," Jay said. "Luke and I click well when it comes to writing lyrics and Julie always rocks the melodies. The two of us are so in-synch, it's kind of crazy."
