I snapped awake, alert, only to hear my phone ringing on the bedside table.

Groaning I reached out for the phone, annoyed that even after working till late night I have to pick up a call.

Mama.

Jesus. I think and check the time.

"Mama." I asked it was almost five o clock in the morning when her sniffling voice came through the speaker of my phone.

The small cries made me sit up alert and rigid.

"Mama?" I asked again. "Love, what's wrong? Are you okay? Where's papa?"

She sniffs again.

"Mummy." I sigh. "Tell me what's making you cry-"

"Is it true that the inn was attacked?" She mumbled.

Jesus fucking Christ.

I sigh, leaning my head back against the backrest of the bed. Blaire close beside me.

Sleeping.

Too close.

"Why won't you tell me?" She snaps. "Why don't you tell me anything!"

"Mama." I say, trying to soothe her girlish reasons for worrying too much.

Honestly, sometimes she's scared too much.

"What if the bad guys got you or something like that?" She asks in an angry admonishing tone. "And what about Blaire- poor thing, she must be scared. So scared."

"I am fine mama. And Blaire is too." I reassure.

"Are you with papa?" I ask trying to change the subject.

"Um-hm." She says, her voice still sounding like tears falling from her eyes.

"Can you hand him the phone for me?" I ask.

"Why?" She snaps. "You talk to me, I called you!"

I hear dad chuckle from beside her.

"How did you know that the inn was attacked?" I ask.

You couldn't call it an attack.

It was almost a felony.

But the reason was still unknown.

Nobody had any idea about Blaire, so an attack on her, personally seems irrational.

"Daddy didn't tell me." She says, defending him for no reason whatsoever. "I overheard."

"Overheard?" I ask. "Now, what about listening to other's conversation-"

She must have heard when it was being discussed in dad's office at night right after I send the men with the news.
