Once John dropped you off you complained you were tired from “all the excitement,” he understood and left. You couldn’t believe you were engaged; even if you weren’t on good terms with Luke he deserved to know. When you were sure John was gone you grabbed your keys and drove to Luke’s house.
You knocked twice and were greeted by the lanky boy you had grown up with; you could tell he was surprised to see you.
“Sarah, you’re here.”
“Yes Luke, I’m here, I can’t stay long. There’s something I need to tell you and if I don’t spit it out now I don’t think I’ll be able to tell you.” He waited paitently and silently waiting for you to him.
“John asked me to marry him,” his eyes grew wide with shock.
You lifted up your hand to show him your ring finger, “and I said yes.”
He was in shock.
“Sarah, you can’t marry him.”
“Luke, I can marry him if I damn well want to, and I am marrying him and that’s final.”
“But that’s my baby Sarah, our baby,” he pleaded “You can’t marry him.”
“If things were different Luke and you hadn’t said all that shit to me the morning after then maybe, just maybe I would be raising this baby with you. Maybe if you had been there for me instead of avoiding me for all those weeks you would be part of this baby’s life, but you weren’t. You showed me that this baby would be better off with a father who gave a damn and a father who would be there for this child. That’s just not you.”
You didn’t mean to but you had yelled that at him, in his face, and for a brief moment you saw pain in his eyes before he masked it.
“So what are you a gold digger is that it? Is that why you’re marrying John? Well from where I’m sitting it looks like you’re nothing but a slut.”
My best friend just called me a slut. I wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole and die.
Within seconds after it left his lips he realized what he had said, You couldn’t hold back the tears this time as you turned to leave, he tried to stop you.
“Sarah wait I didn’t mean it.” You kept walking to your car and he chased after you.
“Sarah please don’t go.” You got in your car and started it. Goodbye Luke.
You sped away from his house and waited till he was out of view before you let the tears come down, you can’t remember the last time you had cried this hard if ever, how could he call you a slut? Did he not realize it takes two to make a baby? He was just as responsible as I was. You were sobbing now, deep, uncontrollable sobs of pain. You took off your seatbelt for a second and reached into your dashboard as you approached a stop sign to an empty intersection. There was suddenly a loud noise and then just like that everything was cold and you ached all over. Then nothing; everything was black.
You woke up to bright lights in a moving car, no not a car, an ambulance? What happen?
“Ma’am you’re going to be okay you were in an accident, “one of the workers told you.
“Is my baby okay?” you asked.
“We won’t know for sure till we get there.”
You were worried sick and were trying your best not to cry; it suddenly felt like an elephant had sat on your chest and things started to get fuzzy, you couldn’t breathe. You could feel yourself slip back into the darkness.
“Ma’am stay with me!” he screamed
But you were already in the dark; it felt so inviting.
“We’re losing her; hurry up and get there!” you could hear everything that was going on around you but it all felt like a dream.
Maybe it was better off this way; but you couldn’t help but worry about the fate of your unborn child.
