You pulled into the nearly abandoned parking lot; from the car you couldn’t spot Luke anywhere. That was saying something since he was a 7FT blonde boy with a quiff that added another foot. You got out and walked towards the playground still not seeing him. As you neared the swings you looked down the hill at the lake. That’s where you saw the gazebo lit up; you instinctively went that way hoping Luke would be there and not some cult ritual.

Your instincts were right, as you neared the entrance you saw Luke surrounded by candles. He was dressed so nicely; the last time he had dressed up like that was when Liz made him for graduation. You were so confused. The candles made his piercing blue eyes appear the prettiest shade of blue you had ever seen and the candles danced shadows across his face only making his beauty more apparent. You were lost looking at him that you didn’t notice the roses he pulled out from behind his back until he had begun to speak.

“Sarah, hi, thanks for meeting me,” he handed the flowers to you; “there’s something I need to tell you.” You waited not wanting to stop him; you were too anxious to hear what he had to say.

“Sarah I have been a shit best friend ever since that night at the party. I wasn’t there for  you and I avoided you. That was terrible of me. The only reason I did though was because I feared that I had messed up our friendship, and that made my feelings for you stronger, I know I’ve been absolute shit at it but I have been in love with you for many, many, many years,” he looked at you nervously and you nodded encouraging him to continue. “All those years I had to see you date other guys killed me, and when they hurt you I wanted nothing more than to smash their faces in, I wanted to give you the world but I never knew how and I always feared that you would reject me and I would be left heartbroken,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out a box and got on one knee before continuing, “but I have been avoiding this for too long so I’m going out on a limb now, I’m putting it all of the table for you,” he opened up the box revealing a modest but gorgeous ring, “Sarah will you please marry me?”

Tears rolled down your cheeks; you didn’t even have to think of an answer you already knew what you were going to say. “Yes Luke, of course I’ll marry you,” you smiled. This felt different than when John had asked you, not only was it inmate and sweet but it was genuine and you felt the way you were supposed to when agreeing to spend forever with someone; you were overwhelmed with love and joy. He slid the ring onto your finger and got up pulling you into a tight bear hug. He pulled away and looked down on you; for the first time you had noticed tears in his eyes and he smiled before kissing you. In all the years of knowing Luke you had never seen his eyes light up that way before; from intense joy and happiness, knowing that you caused that was one of the best feelings you could’ve imagined.

After you helped Luke clean up the gazebo you two walked along the lake talking and reminsing.

“So, if you’ve loved me for so long Luke why did you date so many tramps and have all those one night stands?” You were genuinely curious; now that you knew everything it made no sense. He stopped walking and turned to look at you before speaking.

“I thought I never had a chance with you Sarah, that you could never love me back, those girls were to try to get over you; I was trying to find a replacement or someone better; someone who could make me feel anything,” he paused pulling you close, “none of them came close to you though.” He kissed your forehead gently.

“Luke?” He had put everything on the table it was your turn now.

                “Hmm..?”

“I’ve been in love with you since high school.” He pulled away to look at you in shock.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me baby?” he frowned.

“The same reasons as you basically, I saw you with all the girls and you always called me your sister and said you were into incest; I thought I never had a chance with you.” He chuckled.

“God, I was dumb.” He put a hand on your chin and lifted your head up so you were looking at him, “but I’ve seen what it’s like without you in my life and what it’s like to almost lose you, I never want to feel that again, and I never want you to risk going on with life not knowing how I feel. I love you.” He leaned down and kissed you. You were the happiest you had been in years.

Luke followed you in his car back to your apartment to sleepover. Once inside your place you two laid in bed talking and cuddling before falling asleep. You were engaged to the love of your life; literally your whole life. You were going to move in together, get married, and maybe even have a family someday. Life was good, no, it was perfect.
