vibranium shield

Damn Steve missed Natasha. It was an understatement to say that he missed her. He missed her like hell. He longed for her.

During the final battle against Thanos when he had his shield hacked to pieces he had thought of her. The many times she had used his shield during a mission. When they first met and were fighting side by side during the battle of New York, he had used his shield to shield both of them as a chitari vessel exploded. He later used the shield mid battle to give her a boost which had caused much panic for her safety. He had used the very same shield to shield her from the blast that exploded on their failed undercover mission during the time HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. The same shield she had picked up when Steve had dropped it fighting a robot and tossed it up into the air for him to catch, with a smug "I am always picking up after you boys." When they were facing Ultron and fighting robots, he had thrown her the shield mid battle for her to protect herself and fight. She had later thrown it back to him as he leapt over a robot, destroying it and protecting her. There were many other times in between, but none as significant.

After his shield had been confiscated by the government, she was the one who managed to get it back and tasked Sharon with returning their equipment. During the battle of Wakanda against Thanos, he had used a shield, but a different one. And it didn't feel the same. They disbanded for five years until Tony came back one day with his shield, the same one Howard Stark had personally made for Steve and told him "He made it for you. He'd want you to have it back."

Natasha didn't use it, but had simply smiled and ran her fingers down the shield, feeling the cool metal on her finger tips. They then went on separate missions, with her last words to him being "See you in a minute." And through her pain, he saw her smile for the very last time. He barely had time to process her death when Thanos attacked again. With a heavy heart, he picked up the same shield and fought as hard as he could. He had to make her sacrifice worthwhile. He had to fight with everything he had left, which wasn't much because afterall she was the most significant part in his life.

Thanos had came down on them hard. Steve had used his shield to protect himself, just like all those times before he had done with both Natasha and himself. But Thanos was stronger than that. He brought his blade down on the shield and piece by piece, the vibranium chipped away. With every piece brought a flashback of Natasha using the shield and it hurt. When nearly half of the shield was broken off and Steve was in no shape to fight, Thanos had tossed Steve back, causing him to practically fly through the air and land on his side. As Steve lay on the floor, tears began to fall from his face and was mixed with the dirt and grime. He thought he saw the light for a second and heard her voice. The sweet, angelic voice he longed to hear one more time. "Rogers, don't give up. Fight. For me, for us." He heard. With a groan, he struggled to get up and when he did, he was in great pain. He limped towards Thanos, tightening his shield as Natasha's smile flashed through his mind.

And that's when he heard it. A small crackle in his ear piece. "On your left." Portals began to open from his left and many others soon joined him on the battlefield. As he called for mjolnir and yelled "Avengers," he was reminded of the time he and Natasha had said it together, practising and planning the exact moment they would say it. "Assemble," He whispered as everyone began charging towards Thanos and his army.

Eventually, Thanos was defeated, with the cost of both Tony and Natasha's lives, and he was tasked with the job of returning the stones. Along the way, he thought of what he would do, how he would move on, maybe even go back to Peggy in the past. But Peggy had moved on and found the love of her life, he should too. Only that the love of his life was lying lifeless att the bottom of a cliff.

Vormir was his last stop and it pained him to see Natasha throw herself off the cliff. "Let me go," she whispered to Clint. "It's okay." It wasn't okay. It would never be okay. She was gone and it would never be the same. She was the one who told him that trading lives was not an option so many years ago but here she was. It didn't help the fact that the guardian of the soul stone also happened to be his arch enemy, the Red Skull.

"Give her back," he yelled. The Red Skull shook his head and told Steve it was impossible. "Please," he begged, his voice weak and shaky. "You said a soul for a soul. We sacrificed her so that we could get the stone and we don't need it anymore so we're giving it back in return for her. Please I need her back." He sobbed but the Red Skull didn't know anymore than he did. He gave up, walking to the bottom of the cliff where his lover's lifeless body lay. With a gasp, he collapsed on the floor and the tears started flowing. He ran his fingers through her blood streaked hair as he cradled her head.

Suddenly, the stone began to glow and have a life of its own. Steve took the stone in his hand and felt the energy surge through him. Slowly, he placed the stone on Natasha's body. He didn't know why he did that, but he did because he felt something compelling him to do so. Natasha's body began to float as a blinding yellow light encircled her. In a flash the light was gone and in its place stood Natasha Romanoff, alive and well. Steve didn't hesitate pulling Natasha into a kiss, a passionate one. His fears and his doubts were gone, Natasha was back in his arms. In that moment, everything felt perfect.

"Did we do it?" Natasha asks with a hopeful look on her face.

"Yes. We did it. We brought everyone back. I even brought you back."

"I know. Thank you. And Tony?"

"He sacrificed."

"Right. I thought I saw him for a bit and then you brought me back."

"I'm glad you're back Tasha."

"I'm glad to be back Steve."

Not to sound clique, but it's safe to say that they got to be happy together and eventually both of them got a life, together.

A/N: i didn't update yesterday because i was lazy to type an author's note. anyways, i wanted to not bring nat back but i realised all the ones i wrote yesterday, yes i wrote again, were all sad and angsty so lets give you something happy to hold you for now. also idk how this is relevant but apparently i printed a picture of romanogers and i didn't know what to do with it so i stuck it on my math workbook. and we all know how i fail math and all but- basically i don't know what the point of it is but everytime i do math i'm going to think of jonathan gray and his math problems embedded ever so well in his stories. also i hope you like this one shot?? busy doing math so i probably won't be as active. god, i hate surds and indices.
