After I had roughed up some bad guys, I took my backpack and had gotten ready to swing down home.
"It's too cold to change out here." I said to myself.
After a series of flips and leaps, I had entered through my bedroom window. I just hoped that nobody had seen me.
I changed out of my Great Responsibility Suit and had put on a white cuffed top and a grey sweater over it. I had rolled the sleeves up and had left some buttons for the sake of fashion sense.
I also kept on my Adidas sneakers because they reminded me of Peter and how we both fought the Rhino together.
"Looking good." I whispered to myself, facing the door - ready to head out.
I opened the door to the sound of my best friend's voice.
"Mm, this guava sauce is great." Complimented Ganke to my mom.
"What was that?" Asked my mom, hurrying over to the other side of the table.
"All good. Little spill." Hurriedly replied Ganke. "Get it cleaned up real quick. All good!"
I resumed taking my time to walk as if I were on a fashion show. The clothes I chose made me feel pretty confident about myself.
"It's alright, man." I said and patted Ganke on the shoulder, when he had walked past me.
Mom had muttered under her breath "oh no" in Spanish, so I knew something was up.
Our apartment was exploding with Christmas decorations and various vibrant lights, while boastfully showing off the fine oak work of the place.
I slowly walked up to my mom and she turned around with an expression of surprise and shock.
"Mijo, muy guapo." She said, opening her arms out for a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
"Gracias, mami." I replied, feeling slightly better from what I had done earlier with the Convoy and the Raft escapees.
"I invited a guest tonight." Said my mom, letting go of me. "Can you get the apartment ready? Maybe put on some music to set the mood."
Mom reached straight for the buzzing phone by her desk.
"Ah, Nadja." Mom muttered, now leaving with the phone in her hand to somewhere more quiet.
"Really? Your campaign manager? On Christmas Eve?" I asked, my voice sounding disappointed and hurt.
"Well, the campaign rally isn't going to plan itself. Thanks for getting the apartment ready, mijo." Thanked my mom, officially leaving my slightly hurt self in the kitchen.
"Hm. Records. Hey, mom! Where's dad's vinyl?" I yelled from the other side of the wall.
"Um, should be in my room." Replied mom.
"Thanks." I replied, heading over to her room at once.
"Clean. Guava." Ganke chanted, as I opened mom's bedroom door. "Priceless...heirloom."
"Guess mom isn't done unpacking either." I said, fully opening to door now and walking into the room.
Whatever the hell Ganke was saying, I'd find out eventually.
"Heh, that wallpaper just screams Abuela." I chuckled, looking at the patterened cloths on the end of her bed.
I had continued rummaging through the stuff, until I had found what I wanted. I saw a file on some guy called the Prowler. All I had known was that he was on my dad's case file.
I finally found the vinyl and had put it into the disk section. The doorbell had went off.
"That doorbell hasn't been working for years." Stated my mom. "Miles, could you get that?"
"Of course." I responded, making my way to the door.
"How are your parents, Ganke? I haven't talked to them in a while?" Asked my mom to my best friend.
"They saw a sea turtle the size of a labrador off Molokini yesterday." Answered Ganke.
"Wow, that's amazing." Responded my mom. "I'm glad you decided to stay in the city. It's fun having you in the house."
"It's good to be here, Ms. Morales." Politely replied Ganke.
Mom got the door instead.
I couldn't believe who I had just seen when mom had opened the door. It was Phin Mason and she was looking hotter. Way hotter. Now I had to play it cool.
She, her dad and I used to do a lot of geeky experiments together. The two of us had been best friends ever since I was fourteen.
"I'm so glad you could make it." Said my mom embracing Phin.
"Thanks for having me, Ms. Morales." Respectfully replied Phin, releasing herself from the hug.
"We missed you." Continued my mom, pointing at me. "Well, this one especially."
"Uh, hi." Greeted Ganke, who was sat on a box beside the Christmas tree.
"Phin, this is Ganke. My friend from Brooklyn Visions Academy." I introduced, gazing at Phin with admiration. Her drastic change had really been growing on me, so had her old look from years ago.. "Ganke, this is Phin."
"My best friend. My other best friend." I pointed out, allowing the two of them to shake hands.
"Oh yeah, you guys won the Middle School Science Fair at county, right?" Asked Ganke. "You made a,uh,.."
"Energy converter!" We both sang at the same time. It was like we were so compatible. She was perfect and I think mom was onto me for it, too. "Jinx!"
I had just looked into her eyes and my heart started beating real fast. Things got a little slow in my mind and I got lost in het gaze for a short period of time. Maybe because I was scared?
Ganke didn't think so. I was just gonna ignore him. It was totally normal to get nervous around someone you hadn't spoken to for ages, right?
Right?
