Caroline was sitting in her car, wishing she took vervain and trying to come up with a way to remind herself that she needed to start, or, at the very least, she needed a way to tell herself that an Original was using her as a spy.

Kol was next to her, asking questions, leaning back in the passenger chair so his feet could sit on the dash, "There's the hybrid best friend."

"Tyler."

"The over-protective guardian."

"Ric," Her voice was monotonous.

"And then, this Stefan character."

"Stefan and MJ are just friends," Caroline took in the empty street around them.

Suddenly he was sitting up, moving her face towards him to add to the compulsion, "Do you really believe that?"

"In all honesty, I think they'd be great together," Her hand flew over her mouth, surprised by her own words, "I don't actually think that!"

"I think you do."

"Stefan and Elena are soulmates."

"And yet, that was still your honest answer."

She shifted away from him, worried.

"Relax, love," He teased.

"It's hard to relax when you have a maniac in the next seat."

"It's not like I'm a threat to you," He pointed out, "You have a purpose."

"You could become one."

He shrugged in agreement, "Stefan Salvatore...okay..."

He leant back again.

"What about Jeremy? Does he matter to her?"

Caroline felt her body go tense, "Why do you know about Jeremy?"

"Nik's sending me to babysit - does she have any relationship with him?"

"Babysit...no, no - "

"Answer the question."

"Yes," Caroline said passionately, "They're incredibly close – surprisingly close."

"Surprisingly?"

"He's Elena's little brother," Caroline summed up, "The rest of us are all tied to her first, him second – them? Nu-uh, they have so much in common, she's like, the only person who can get him to smile in photos – "

Kol frowned.

"He's not in love with her either," She quickly added, "Why do you even care about her relationships this much?"

"I like removing potential problems sooner rather than later."

Her eyes went wide.

Until that moment, she'd brushed the questions off as Kol trying to get to know MJ but not knowing how to. That statement implied something darker.

"What are you talking about?"

"Tragic accidents, Caroline," He sighed wistfully, "Sometimes they happen, and I promise, it's all for the best."

"What's she done to you?" Caroline started to panic, "Why do you wanna hurt her like this?"

"This isn't hurting her," He defended, "Hurting her is trying to chuck her into a pillar the way the other Salvatore did – this is the removal of useless complications that'll stop me. And of the people who tie her to this boring small-town life. It'll be good for her."
