"Mommy?"
"Mommy!"
The little girl cried as she look for her mom around the park. She and her mom recently moved to Busan after her parents divorce. It was confusing for the girl when she realized that she won't be seeing her father anymore. She went hysterical so her mother took her to the nearest park to try to calm her down.
And when she did calm down, her mom got a phone call. When she saw a man selling cotton candy, she couldn't help but run towards him and didn't realize that her mom's attention wasn't with her that time.
"Are you lost?"
A voice called out for her and when she turned around, she saw a girl her age wearing a black sweater.
"I can't find my mommy" the lost girl sniffed and buried her tiny face on her palms.
"I'll help you find your mommy. My name is Y/N"
"I'm Jennie" the girl in black extended her arms towards the crying girl and brushed her tiny fingers against Jennie's tear-stained cheeks.
"Don't cry now, Nini. You're safe as long as you're with me" Y/N said as she linked her arms with Jennie and went straight to the patrol officer to find her mom.
That day marked the start of a beautiful friendship.
---
The two were inseperable since kindergarten. When little Jennie stepped inside her classroom for the first time, the kids laughed at her because she was still clutching a stuffed bear in her arms.
"Guys look she's still have a teddy bear! What a baby!"
She tried to swallow back the sobs that are threatening to come out of her mouth when a voice echoed in the entire room.
"Stop making fun of her, Jimin! Your mom told my grandma that you still pee in bed!" A little girl shouted and everyone laughed. All attention was now on the young boy, Jimin, who sat quietly on his seat while his face flushed in bright red.
"Nini!" A girl wearing black came running towards Jennie and the cat-eyed girl's mood immediately changed when she realized who saved her from embarassment.
"Y/N!"
"Come sit beside me, Nini! Teacher gave me lots of papers, we can share it and draw pictures together." Y/N quickly released Jennie in her tight embrace and dragged her towards a small table with lots of crayons, pencils and papers stacked on top of it.
Y/N helped her again and it seems that she was destined to be Jennie's knight in shining armor.
---
"Y/N. Yah! Wake up now! You're going to be late in school!" Y/N's grandma, Lyn, shook her granddaughter's body. It was always hard to wake her up since she's too lazy to go to class. All Y/N did was put her blanket on top of her head in attempt to push her grandma away.
"Jennie's waiting outside" and those words completely woke Y/N up as she bolted straight to her bathroom to take the quickest shower.
"The food looks delicious Mrs. Y/L/N. Thank you for the wonderful breakfast" you overheard your bestfriend's voice at the dinning table as you quietly descended the stairs.
"You're like my granddaughter now, Jennie and my house is always open for you. And how many times do I have to tell you to call me mama?"
"Aww you guys are too sweet. I'm about to cry" You said sarcastically while brushing away your fake tears. The laugh that escaped your bestfriend's mouth brought out the stupid butterflies in your stomach and you tried to brush it off quickly.
Your feelings towards Jennie developed as you got older and you always tell yourself that it is wrong to like your bestfriend in a non-platonic way. So everytime she makes you feel certain things, you always find a way to distract yourself from falling harder on this girl.
"Stop daydreaming Y/N and eat your breakfast. You and Jennie will certainly be late." Lyn reprimanded you and you let out a sigh of relief when you realize that you were imagining things again, however, it didn't escape Jennie's eyes when she saw the way you look at her.
---
"Can't we just ditch class?"
"No, silly. Your grandma will definitely kill me when she finds out we're cutting classes, Y/N" Jennie said as she stepped out of your car.
"And besides, we're in our last two months in senior year now. It's not as bad as you think" the smaller girl added while placing her arm around your waist. Your breath hitched for a second.
You hate clingy people but you seem to have this soft spot for Jennie, only for her. It was okay whenever she hugs you or showers your face with kisses but everything changed when you started to develop feelings towards her.
"You're boring, Jen"
"I know, but you love me anyway"
'If you only knew'. You thought when she said those words to you.
When you stepped inside Busan High building, all eyes were on you. It didn't bother you since you're used to it now but the girl beside you feels the opposite way. Her hands were clammy and beads of sweat start to appear on her forehead. You took her hand and smile at her, reassuring her that you will be there no matter what. The kids in school were still curious on how you and Jennie became bestfriends when your personality is definitely far from each other.
You are the school's official troublemaker and most of your teachers have a hard time handling your constant change of mood, but you somehow manage to pass all of your subjects at an above average grade. Being a stubborn student you are made you a popular kid in highschool, the cool and mysterious vibe you give off also made girls and boys drool over you. But none of them caught your attention because you were too busy being the captain of the school's volleyball team and being the lead vocalist of your band.
Jennie, on the other hand, was the quiet and responsible one. She is a very unpredictable person. She prefers to isolate herself at home than surround herself with a bunch of sweaty people in a party. Although she loves to sing and dance, Jennie hates to sing in front of anyone she knows, except for Y/N of course. Y/N would always accompany her to auditions and treats her a milk ice cream whenever she gets rejected.
The café near her house is where you'll find her studying, she would sit at the far end corner where no one would disturb her peace. She was an honor student and most kids in your school make fun of her and often call her names. It made you mad one time and had to shove a boy against the locker for calling your bestfriend a weirdo. You almost got suspended if Jennie didn't speak up.
You didn't care about what happens to you, if you get hurt or not, you didn't mind if you get in trouble too because you always put Jennie first. Growing up together made you overprotective of her and seeing her smile was your goal everyday. Others think of you as a heartless and cold bitch but none of them know how much of a softie you are. Being cold to others were kind of like a defense mechanism. It was the only way to protect Jennie.
To protect your heart.
A/N: HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!! It's 2021 now and I hope all of you will be safe and healthy. So here is another story that I wrote. Please continue to support my stories (Lie to Me and If Only) 😊 I hope all of you will enjoy it. Love you ❤
