"Ah, Miss Carson. You're here." McGonagoll said, beckoning me to follow her.

"I understand you have had it hard over the summer with the death of Sirius Black. I know he was like family to you."

I nodded and looked down at my feet. I didn't like her sympathy. The way she was talking to me like a child.

McGonagoll coughed and carried on. "Now. We teachers have heard about the rumours of how he died. The ones that include you."

My hearts race picked up. Surely she wasn't going to punish me for being part of a rumour?

"The headmaster and I have had a little discussion and have decided that you should be watched over by someone in your year. Just to make sure you are doing alright."

My head jerked up. We had reached her office and I stared at her in shock.

"Professor I don't mean to be rude, but everyone hates me. No one would agree to do what you are asking."

I hated the idea of always being watched. Especially by someone who didn't actually like me.

"Yes well. We managed to find someone who is not taking sides in this silly little argument."

"Silly? Sirius has died and you call that silly?" I didn't mean to raise my voice. How dare she talk about Sirius' death like that.

"Well. Follow me and you'll meet them." She said, as though she didn't hear me.
I huffed and walked into her office.

I've only been in here a few times. Once because I got the highest potions grade, once because I was caught getting high with Fred and George, and once because of Sirius.

"Now it'll only be temporary as we realise you don't want to be watched over all the time. It's only until we feel you have started to feel better."

I shrugged and shifted my feet.
McGonagoll sighed and called out, "You can come out now!"

I looked up and saw a tall, slim boy coming from behind McGonagolls stairs. He was wearing Slytherin robes and he had pale skin that made him look cold.

His blond hair was somewhat messy unlike how it used to be. He had his hands in his pockets and a smug look on his face. It was almost angelic.

"Draco Malfoy? Are you kidding?"
My mouth could have been hanging open.
I wouldn't have known. This can't be real.

"No, Miss Carson. I'm not kidding." McGonagoll uttered sternly. "I know he isn't exactly someone you're particularly close with but he was the only one..." She paused.

"The only one who was willing to do it. I get it." I conferred.
"It's been a while, Carson." Draco smirked.

In the next week nothing much changed. Draco smirked at me in the hallways and made witty comments in front of me but nothing noticeably altered. Until the week after.

McGonagoll came to speak to me again after the first week and asked me how everything was going.

I didn't say much. I just said that my life hasn't really been any different. She frowned but just left without saying anything else. The Monday after that conversation was when things changed.

It was Monday afternoon. I had my fifth period free. We were meant to use it as a study session but I just read the Daily Prophet and ate sweets from Honeydukes.

At a time like this last year, I would have been roaming around the corridors, messing around with the twins or running outside with Harry, Ron and Hermione, not having a care in the world. I missed it.

Draco came up to me and sat on an empty seat beside me. I raised my eyebrows and did a breathy laugh.

"Draco Malfoy sitting with a Gryffindor? That's something you don't see everyday." I retorted.
Our background is what you could call, well, complicated.

Our families used to know each other. My father went to school with Lucius Malfoy and they were friends. Well. That's what my dad said.

My mother said that Lucius used him to do his homework for him. They grew up together until they had an argument over me and Draco.

My mother thought Draco and his family would be a bad influence. I don't blame her for thinking that. The Malfoy history is not the most inspirational.

They haven't talked since we were born. Draco and I stayed friends at the first year until he decided I wasn't good enough for him. I think his father persuaded him to.

Draco laughed and took one of my chocolate frogs and started unwrapping it.
"Believe me I'd rather not be here."

"Then why did you take up the job in the first place Malfoy. Riddle me that one." I said, taking back my chocolate frog and taking out the card.

A little bit of colour appeared in the top of his cheeks but it went away as quickly as it came.

"Very funny, Carson." Draco sneered playfully.
"McGonagoll had a go at me for not checking up in you. So here I am. How are you, Carson?"

I scoffed at him and rolled my eyes.
"I was fine until you came over, Malfoy." I said getting up from the table, and gathering my things.

"Hey hey wait!" Draco said, following me out of the Great Hall.
"What do you want, Draco?" I huffed, turning to face him.

"Just to see you, Carson. I think since we're going to be seeing each other a lot more now,  you need a nickname." He smirked at me.

"You're funny. It's not like we're best pals now Malfoy. Just leave me alone."
I tried to walk away to the Gryffindor common room but Draco gabbed my shoulder.

"Now now, Carson. No need to get feisty." There was a slight childish tone in his voice. It made him sound almost cute.

"I think I should call you Pops. It's cute isn't it?" Malfoy laughed to himself. He probably thought he was so hilarious.

"Don't even. You dare call me that I will never talk to you again." I said.
"I think that would be more of a loss for you than me right, Pops?" Draco said, looking me in the eyes.

His brilliant blue eyes looked sparkly and delicate amongst the ghostly paleness of his skin and hair.
"Whatever Malfoy." I rolled my eyes at him and walked away.

"I'll check up on you tomorrow, Pops! Don't you worry!" He yelled from behind me.
I chuckled to myself. Malfoy was...interesting.
