Maddison spent four days in the hospital after giving birth to her firstborn child Riley.
Maddison and her husband Stephen were ecstatic to welcome their first child into the world after being married for three years.
But soon Stephen noticed the toll childbirth took on his wife...
"What if my mom comes over and watches her for a little bit?"
"No!" She said quickly.
Stephen looked into her eyes seeing the unspoken but desperate cries.
"I don't want anybody thinking I can't take care of my own baby..."
The crack in her voice wasn't missed by Stephen. You didn't need a doctor or a therapist or another mother to be able to tell Maddison was struggling, and bad.
Even though she looks like she went to hell and back Stephen was too, not in the same ways, but the same pain.
It was hard watching his wife of 3 years cry while holding her newborn baby in her arms, she always wanted to be a mother and now she is... but it's not like her dreams.
"Mads nobody thinks that. You just need a break for a little bit."
Stephen put his hand on her knee intending to comfort her, make her feel at home, calm her. But none of that happened.
"Baby, I love you more than anything, you know that right? This is why I think you need to get away for a little bit. Just a couple hours, that's all."
"I don't want to leave Stephen. I just want to be at home with my family, I just don't want to be seen by the world right now..."
"But you need some fresh air baby your doctor wants you to move around a little bit"
Maddison sighed before looking down at her daughter. For any other woman going through postpartum depression, it would be simple to go out to the store or a restaurant and spend time out with your husband alone.
But not when you're Madison Curry.
Not when you're married to star athlete Stephen Curry.
Not when you just gave birth to what people expect to be "the next best basketball player".
From Stephen's eyes, everything was easy, he could walk around and be content with everything around him but for Maddison it felt like everybody had their eyes on her, just waiting for her to mess up.
They wanted her to fall and they would wait quietly until she did.
But that's not something she was gonna allow.
Stephen sat there waiting for a response but it never came. He sighed before standing up and leaving her in the nursery with Riley alone.
The minutes were slow and grueling for Maddison but they went by and Stephen's mother came in.
She was happy and peppy as always, Maddison gave her a weak smile in return as she sat down next to her.
"Hi, Honey how are you feeling?"
"I'm fine"
"I know you aren't but if you don't want to admit it that's okay" she smiled, "I think Stephens right and I know you don't want to hear that right now but it's the truth."
"I'll be fine I just need a couple of days"
Sonya looked at her daughter in law, she welcomed Maddison easily when Stephen brought her home, she was so polite and nice it was hard not to love her.
But she has never seen her quite like this.
"Maddison, you need to be honest with yourself. Just because you feel like this doesn't mean you're a bad mother, it means you're human and you're struggling with something very common after birth"
"Is Stephen mad at me?"
Sonya's heart broke watching the new tear fall from her eye.
"No baby he is just worried about you that's all. You didn't do anything to make him mad"
She gave a weak nod and Sonya returned with a smile.
After a couple of hours of Maddison holding and feeding her Riley, she just didn't feel better.
To Maddison's surprise, Stephen's sister Sydel walked into Riley's pink little nursery.
"Hey, Stephen needs you downstairs. I can watch the baby"
She hesitated a moment before handing Riley over to her.
She slowly walked down the stairs still feeling the pains of just giving birth days prior, quickly wiping away any tears from her face.
She walked into the kitchen not seeing Stephen.
"Stephen" she called out and waited to see what he could possibly be up to now.
"Out here!" He yelled from outside.
She followed his voice to their deck that was covered in rose petals and candles.
She gave him a little smile while he stood there proud of his work.
"What is all this?"
"This is your getaway without leaving, my beautiful bride"
He kissed her forehead before walking her to the table that was covered in her favorite foods and desserts.
They sat there and ate while they talked, being alone for the first time in a few days.
That was only the beginning.
Stephen tried his hardest to help her feel better, though it took a while she did come around and a month later they are now a happy family of three.
Stephen is just glad to have his wife back while Maddison is happy to feel like herself again.
He knew she would be back... it just took a little bit.
