December 22nd. Today's date by the way. So close to my favourite holiday. It was something I was actually looking forward to. It's not like I would get loads of toys or lots of money considering my family isn't at the top of the pyramid money wise. I'm also seventeen years of age, so the most I was going to get were a few clothes and maybe art supplies. I didn't mind at all though, it was more about the feeling that the holiday gave. If that made sense. The cold wind that blew the smell of hot chocolate from the local shop, the bright lights that we were sure to pass by every time we were on the road, the Christmas songs that my family would blast in the house and i would shout along the lyrics. It all showcased the one special holiday. The energy that came from it never failed to make our small family happy.I stood in my average sized room currently hanging up a homemade snowman that was created out of styrofoam. It definitely wasn't the best made or prettiest decoration but I would put it up every year, it was sort of a tradition for me now. I finished and hopped down from the small stool i was standing on, taking a step back to admire my room. I'd been decorating all day, not only was it something to do, but it put me in a great mood as well. My eyes grazed over the different coloured lights lining up along the sides of my walls. On my small desk that was backed up to a corner of my room, sat a small Christmas tree decorated with all kinds of tiny ornaments. There were other small decorations such as the snowman hanging around randomly in the room as well. I smiled to myself and a small giggle left my lips at the lit up room.
I threw myself onto my bed, taking in the sweet sent of a cinnamon candle i lit a not too long ago. That scent alone reminded me of the amazing holiday that was soon approaching.
It was around seven at night so i decided to go down into the living room where my parents would often be, and see what they were up to.
I made my way down the stairs. The icy wood sent shivers up my legs as i was wearing no socks. When I neared the bottom of the stairs, i could hear the television on and the scent of food crawled its way into my nose. I immediately recognized the scent as lasagna. That put my mood up even more considering it was a real tasty meal.
"Hey mom" I said to the woman cooking the food, i then directed my attention to the male sitting on the couch, "Hey dad."
"Hello sweetie" my mom said at the same time my dad spoke up, "Hey Natalia."
I sat at the table in a comfortable silence before i decided to break it a minute later.
"Do we have any plans for this christmas?"
My mother looked at me for a moment before focusing her attention back down to the meal she was cooking. "Yeah actually we do."
She had an odd smile planted on her face as my father turned around to look at me with a similar smile when he picked up on our conversation.
I furrowed my eyebrows looking between both of them. "Mind telling me?"
She giggled a bit before speaking again. "Yes I will right now, let's just all sit and eat first."
I silently groaned because I was very impatient and wanted to know the answer now. Yet i managed to sit there quietly and hummed while i was waiting for the lasagna to finish up and be served. I heard the sound of the metal pan being taken out, and being put on the stove. My mother waved a plate towards it, fanning it, I'm guessing in an attempt to cool it off (it didn't work).
Once the smoke was barely visible coming from the once steaming pasta, she cut up some slices and places them gently on three plates. She grabbed them and set them on the table, then going to get two cups of water, and a cup of apple juice which she knew was still my favourite. When she finished that up, she squealed excitedly running to sit at the seat across from me.
"Come sit down and eat with us honey" she barely shouted out to the man on the couch.
He made his way over to us at the table and placed a kiss on my moms cheek, thanking her for the food.
Once we were all settled down and eating bites of the pasta i asked again.
"Can i know now please?" I said in a sort of sing song tone.
She smiled wide again as well as my dad, weirdos. I placed a piece of lasagna in my mouth not prepared for my moms next words.
"We're going back to New Jersey!"
